It’s a big day for new car prices - first Cadillac, now Jeep, who has priced their 2008 Liberty. In a typical trend for new car introductions, the ‘08 is $1,000 less than an equivalent outgoing model, starting at $20,330 for a 4×2 Liberty Sport.
That price doesn’t include the $660 destination charge, but it does include a lot of standard safety features, including side curtain airbags, electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes, among other features. A 4×4 Sport runs $21,940, while the upmarket Limited starts at $24,515, or $26,125 for a 4×4.
A four-speed automatic is option (a six-speed manual is standard), both with the 3.7-liter, 210-horsepower V6. The power-folding cloth top, called Sky Slider, runs $1,200.

What surprises me the most is that it was the strong selling compact suv a couple of years back. Which leads me to believe consumers obviously dont know their ass from a hole in the ground. I could name at lease 5 others that would beat this peace of crap hands down, every year in almost every catagory.

People buy Jeeps because they’re a Jeep, not some poser Toyonda C-RaV4. The one suv’s I have ever owned and still own, have been Jeeps and that’s never going to change. Rugged, dependable, go anywhere, do anything - that’s a Jeep. Someone who will never take a vehicle off road will never understand a Jeep.
Regardless of all that… this is what the Liberty should have looked like when it first came out. This finally looks like a Cherokee replacement. The last one always looked like it was designed for girls. Looks aside it did however handle exceptionally well out on the trails.

I agree with tree… I’ve been on the forum for a long time, and some of the comments can become quite annoying…
And as AMGoff said, they’re built with trails in mind… The majority of people that I know who own Jeeps do lots of recreational activities, that doesn’t necessarily mean mud bogging or trails… They’re more dependable than any CR-V or RaV4 when you want to tow small loads, or just go out and have fun.
Plus, it has (or atleast HAD) a diesel, which at the time (and still IS) the only diesel in a small SUV on the market… I heard it sold really well too.
The interior is uninspiring, looks like a Dodge Dakotas with different color panels… I’d like to see a more aggresive interior, I must say.

The Commander payed homage to the Cherokee and the Wagoneers. The Liberty was brought out to replace the Cherokee which was on the market for some 18 years. If anything this new Liberty looks closer to the Cherokee that it replaced than the old one.

Jeep is one of the few 4×4 makers, along with Land Rover, who still make proper off-roaders.
In the UK everyone prefers a Landie though, I guess it’s just patriotism really. Jeeps are undoubtedly more popular in the US.

MY Si.. Sure, the Commander styling is horrible.. but they would have sold like hotcakes despite that if only the vehicle was larger. Apparently consumers aren’t as stupid as Jeep thought and realized that trying to make a 7-seater from the Grand Cherokee platform without increasing the wheelbase or length doesn’t yield all that much extra space. Using the foot-longer Durango platform may have helped Commander sales despite the heinous styling, but obviously Chrysler wanted the Aspen for itself.
As far as the Liberty, it is still sold as the Cherokee in other markets, so Jeep is sort of tied to the boxy, upright look.. plus, the new Liberty is just a Dodge Nitro in Commander disguise.

We basically a Jeep family - myself, my dad, both my brothers - all jeeps. I’ve driven a Liberty (my brother’s) through the trails in the pine barrens as well as the bogs down along the river. Say what you want but that little Liberty didn’t leave us stuck even once. Does it tackle things as gracefully as my Grand Wag, no - but it still gets the job done. You may think it’s some sort of joke, but they don’t put “trail rated” on them just for ****s and giggles.

Hey, if the Wrangler had a single ounce more of dependability, I would have honest to God bought one. The best Wrangler to buy is a used Wrangler with 40-60k miles on it. When they are working, they work very well. I bought the XTerra OffRoad instead. It’s obviously bigger, as capable, and fairly inexpensive. But I would trade it for a dependable open top Rubicon the day they build one.
The Liberty accomplishes it’s goal as it intended. It’s not a Wrangler, it wasn’t intended to be. Nor was it intended to be a Grand Cherokee. It’s an inexpensive 5 seat people and cargo hauler, with better than average off road talents. And this new design will put more on the road than before.

I’m a diehard Jeeper myself. Will probably never change. I’m on my second Wrangler and I’m addicted. I offroaded with a Liberty once as well, and NEVER got stuck. It’s a remarkable SUV, especially with proper tires and a budget lift.
Piablo, I’ve never had any major problems with either Wrangler (00 and 04), but the 07 Wrangler is a ****ing nightmare. There are so many electrical problems (power loss at freeway speeds), busted U-joint stories, leaking top fiascos, and missing paint complaints that it’s comical. I was told by my OWN DEALER to wait for the 08s to come out, WAY too many glitches being revised.

Suzie… I mean Assclown, I’m almost frightened that we have things in common. I have always been a diehard Mopar-man. My ‘04 Regal GS is the first non-Chrysler car I’ve ever bought, then again since the Germans made a mess of Chrysler I really had no choice but to go with the General. While I may drive the Buick to work every day, once the weekend hits I’m in my Jeep. If there’s one brand I’m completely loyal to, it’s Jeep. A Jeep has never left me stranded wherever I’ve gone, because of that I will never buy a 4×4 that isn’t one. My very first car was a CJ-8 Scrambler, my God did I love that thing, I kick myself in the balls all the time for ever getting rid of that thing, especially seeing what they’re going for now. The first thing the wife and I bought as a couple were his and hers Cherokees. When I got rid of mine it had about 220,000 miles on it and I still see the guy I sold it to driving around town in it, I still think to this day that the 4.0L straight-six was the most bulletproof engine ever created.. We just picked up an ‘85 CJ-7 that we’re restoring little by little. My current on is a cherry ‘89 Grand Wagoneer, that was THE vehicle I always wanted growing up and when I found one in great shape I jumped at the chance to have her. Sure, her carburated 360 only gets 11mpg downhill, with a tailwind, but I love her and won’t make the same mistake I did with the Scrambler. She’s a tank that will literally go anywhere, in low gear she’ll crawl up a 30 degree gravel incline without stepping on the gas. The technology in that beast is so ancient that I have yet to encounter any problem I couldn’t fix with my trusty Haynes manual. Plus I can rightfully walk around saying I have the biggest woody in town. So yeah, you could say I’m a diehard Jeeper.

Yes, Elvio, they can go offroad… I don’t personally own a Jeep but my half brother owns a Cherokee. From what I know, he hasn’t taken it off on trails, but it’s been a great car. He remarked it was really versatile, after 150,000 miles it still ran good, and had enough oomph to easily tow his boat. And I know for a fact when they badge it trail rated- they mean nothing less than trail rated. I’m not so sure about the new Jeep Wrangler, I’ve heard there’s been a few reliability issues, but I’ve seen them do their share on trails.
And myself, I’ve driven a diesel Jeep Liberty before and taken it around, not on trails but through mild terrain- it seemed like a really capable vehicle. I wouldn’t want one though, I’m not in the market for an SUV, but I wanted to try out a few vehicles for myself. While I was at it I tried out a few other vehicles, and went to a few other dealerships. The Toyota Rav4, personal tests (such as Edmunds) has gotten around 20 mpg, and that’s not in 2008 rates.

Elvio - Don’t be an ass. I don’t think anyone is stating the Liberty is the ultimate standard in off roading. But I would certainly want a Liberty over a Rav4 or CRV or Equinox or the many others in it’s class. Whats the point in Jeep putting front and rear locking difs in every vehicle they make? They have to stay in business and that means making vehicles people will buy. I don’t think we need 10 versions of the Wrangler, one will do fine.

And by offroad I don’t mean pulling it around in your back yard in order to provide more seats for your gay pride parade after-party. Just because you find it impossible to drive in three inches of snow doesn’t mean you should blame it on the Jeep, only your own incompetence. A piss-poor driver can turn the greatest vehicle into the worst. I never said it was the best Jeep ever made you douche, I only said it was a damn capable little thing that handled real offroad situations rather nicely. Aston - Which Land Rover are you referring to? Ranger Rover? LR3? LR2? Defender? There’s a big difference between all models. The Defender is the last of what made Land Rover great. The rest of the models have become what you hate most in Escalades… Even then, I would put the H3, or XTerra up against the Defender. A Rubicon takes each of them. But the H1 stills reigns as the champ.

OK OK OK, everyone listen up.
AMGackoff, you say you kicked yourself in the balls for getting rid of your Scrambler. You actually have balls? LOL!
Asston Martin: your stupid comments about Land Rovers demonstrate you’ve never been offroading. They have ****ty clearance, inferior approach/departure angles (c/w Jeeps) and are notoriously unreliable. As Piablo stated, the Defender is the only one that merits discussion here. Don’t buy into the Land Rover superiority myth, it’s just that, a myth.
Which brings me to Piablo: I’m not so sure about the H1. Some of the hardware is technically impressive, but the sheer volume and weight of the vehicle ensures it gets bogged down frequently. I’ve never offroaded with an H1 in the group, but the 4×4 forums are littered with stories about them getting high centered, stuck in mudpits, snapping tie rods, etc…Too heavy and expensive.

My problem with the Southerners is that most of them are a bunch of bigoted, racist, religious retards who are rooted in the past and worship fried food.
In Clarkson’s Good, Bad and the Ugly the Americans lose just about every single contest, including the off-roading one where the Range Rover trashes the Hummer and the Cadillac.
As for my unique point of view, you will find that many Britons have a similar one.
