I think that is wrong that they are trying
to buy americans off with $100.00, While the gas prices keep rising. $100.00 is really just a penny dropped in the bucket. How about all those americans that worked, But didn't get federal taxes taken out of their checks. Again that is really wrong to americans.

Here is how I see it, the money they are going to spend promoting the $100.00 deal and the money they are going to spend trying to send out all those checks could actually be used to stop taxes on gasoline at the pump. If they want to send us all $100.00, why don't they just save us some time and money and send the oil companies one check. That's really what it amounts to, give even more of our money (tax dollars) to the oil companies.

Well, it is obvious from the responsses that we will not be fooled. I like the $100, but that is because it is $100. No, it is not a lot, and I DO want more. But I will take the $100.

Now, the government and we as citizens need to come up with something more. We should expect this to get worse in the lnog term, and these short term solutions will not work. Imagine gas prices when our kids start driving, $4, $5, $6 a gallon will be normal? Probably.

Innovation and advances in technology will get us to where we need to be. I am tired of hearing about hybrids, ethanol, hydrogen, etc. They are all crap until they become feasable, cost effective, and the majority of engines. We are not the only country in the world to demand oil. Look at China & India. They are HUGE and will soon be demanding more than us, but they are not at the level of conservation or pollution reduction that we are.

Don't blame the government, don't blame big oil, and don't blame automakers. We are all to blame. It is simple economics. Unfortunately for us, we are living during the time of difficulty when the newer & better technologies are still in the infancy stages, are too expensive, or too strange for the majority to flat out demand them. Look at the news, and all the idiots are saying is "LOWER THE GAS PRICES." What the HELL is that going to do for the long term? NOTHING.

What we should all be saying is "I WANT better fuel economy, WITHOUT sacrificing power, AND I WANT it from a source that will outlast our current fuel types." Yes, i have no clue what that fuel or technology will be. You can bet we will figure it out faster though if gas prices keep going higher. If they go lower, what do you think will happen when we finally hit that wall of little oil left on the planet?

"This is only the beginning."

Oh would you stop with those doomsday scenarios already. Even the folks who actually control the oil price know they can't drive it up without an end. The higher the oil price, the more incentive people have to invest in forms of alternative energy and less people will actually use oil.
So all you people who constantly shout "IT'S JUST SUPPLY AND DEMAND" should realize it goes both ways.

How about a tax credit for those of us who use public transportation daily and have ditched cars all together? If the goal is to cut oil usage, how does rewarding those who use it the most offer any incentive to cut back?

I probably speak for more than a few New Yorkers who, even when our transit system was shut completely still managed to get around using a form of mobility everyone else seems to have forgotten about...walking. Instead of filling up your tank, I suggest those of you who get that $100 invest in some good walking shoes. This is only the beginning.

This proposed $100 is nothing more than a transparent bribe to the public hoping for a political payoff in the fall elections. These idiots seem to be emulating their pals, the special interest lobbyists, by trying to use cold cash to get the votes they want.

Here's hoping that the voters will see through this blatent attempt at electorate bribery, throw this current crop of incompetent bums out of office and elect some forward thinking representatives and senators who will actually LEAD this country out of it's destructive oil addiction.

That is so not a solution! That does not address the problem at all. So $100 bucks lets me fill up my gas tank twice. BFD! That is just politics as usual.

The better solution even in the short term would be to repeal the Federal Gasoline tax of 18 cents a gallon as the democrats have suggested, and for each State to repeal or lower their gasoline tax. IE Pa's is 35 cents a gallon.

Now is the time for our government to come up with a SERIOUS energy policy that should be treated as a national security issue. Until it is treated as such nothing will happen.
