12-cylinder showdown: “one helluva ride”

Sometimes the most enjoyable car reviews are for the machines you’re least likely to be shopping for. That’s certainly the case with Motor Trend’s comparison of the Aston Martin DB9, Bentley Continental GT, Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, and Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG. These four vehicles blend sporting and luxury characteristics for no less than $170,000, and as much as $266,000. “It’s all about want over need, lust before logic, and all of that,” writes Matt Stone. “Ferrari’s flamboyant 612 Scaglietti is the newest to market, and, starting at $266,155, is the most expensive here by at least the price of a loaded A8.” Also new to the market is Aston Martin’s “latest future James Bond mobile,” the DB9. Meanwhile, “Mercedes-Benz takes overkill to the extreme in the limited-edition CL65 AMG.” The lowest sticker on this lot belongs to the Bentley Continental GT, which costs $170,971. “This well-toned coupe delivers stunning specs and style at a price point this marque hasn’t played in for decades and allows this most traditional of nameplates to enter new psychographic territories.”
