19,000 GM workers take buyout, retirement offers; more cuts likely

05/29/2008, 3:45 PM

By Drew Johnson

General Motors announced on Thursday that 19,000 of its hourly workers have taken the Detroit-based automaker up on its buyout or retirement offers. In all, GM extended the buyout and retirement plans to over 74,000 UAW workers in an effort to streamline its production efforts.

While GM will not replace all 19,000 workers, it will replace some of the positions will lower-paid hourly workers — in most cases at a pay of about half of what UAW workers currently makes.

However, despite trimming 19,000 workers, GM’s North American turnaround plan has essentially stalled. Therefore GM will be taking Ford’s lead within the next few months and will likely be cutting even more positions, according to Automotive News.

The cuts also reflect how much worse off the domestic automakers are compared to their Japanese counterparts. While the Big Three continue to cut American jobs, the big three from Japan continue to create jobs for American workers.

While details of the next phases of GM’s plans have yet to be announced, we expect to hear more on the subject at the automaker’s annual meeting on June 3.

Big Three continue to cut American jobs, the big three from Japan continue to create jobs for American workers – LLN this is plagiarism. I feel robbed of ideas.

While all this was somewhat inevitable and I’m not here to pick sides, you have to admit there’s some irony in the guy who’s tightening bolts on your $50,000 Enclave showing up to work everyday in a Subaru Justy.

Are you kidding? Ford does not allow non-Ford vehicles in its parking lots. If you are visitor and don’t drive Ford you walk about 3/4 mile to the building.

Not to mention that you will not get a job in union shop if you drive non-union wheels. They will destroy the car. You think they are animals on this site? In real life it is much worse. And if you think it is translates into patriotism and apple pie – it’s actually not. It is pure wolf pack mentality which has no logic behind it.

‘xyunya’, it’s not anywhere that extreme in Canada … at the Oakville plant there were all kinds of cars in the lot.

Good for GM. Get rid of the lazy freeloaders and let them go ruin the quality of Toyotas and Hondas

I heard on the news that GM offered up to 140K per worker to leave. Those 19,000 are the smartest ones around. Now then can move to Indiana or Ohio and work for Honda.

We were singing,
“bye-bye, miss american pie.”
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, “this’ll be the day that I die.
“this’ll be the day that I die.”

Shaver, you’re a fag. IF this is the new world economy, then good. We don’t need to be getting anally raped over prices spiralling up and out of control and then having union monkeys jumping on the dogpile.

At this point, it’s dog eat dog in this society. If you have no job security and you’re getting paid poorly, it’s because THAT’S your station in life. No excuses, no free lunches. You want to move up in the world, get off your ass and make it happen. It’s the American Dream ladies. You want hyperunionization and a security blankie to suck on? Hop in your time machine and head back to mother Russia circa 1982.
