Rare 1965 Shelby Cobra could set record for most expensive car sale

04/28/2009, 2:30 PM

By Nick Aziz

A rare 1965 Shelby Cobra is expected to fetch between $10 million and $15 million at auction on May 15th, according to organizers. The car will almost certainly surpass the U.S. record of $5.5 million for a 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake. There’s also a chance it could set a new world record, if it exceeds the $11 million paid for a 1961 Ferrari California Spyder.

Described as an “American jewel,” the car was the first U.S.-made race car to ever beat Ferrari in world racing championships in Europe. While it is expected to attract interest worldwide, many American car enthusiasts hope it remains on U.S. soil upon sale.

The coupe was hand built and one of only six ever made. Mecum High Performance Auctions will put the car on the block in Indianapolis on May 15.

I got around $5000 on hand right now. Is that enough for a down payment?

Good thing it has a full sized spare tire. That’s a huge selling point.

The other day I raced an older GTI in my ‘95 Neon and won. So by all rights that should put it up there in record breaking territory as well. You know, in the $900 to $1,000 range.

Wasn’t there a movie not long ago called Blackhawk Down? I suspect there’ll be a lot of that going on in a day or two.

4mula,
This is the racing version of the Cobra, so, you’re right, they’re right.

I dunno why I don’t see an 2005 Mustang Cobra going for any price 44 years from now.

Yes, it’s a Daytona Coupe, but it does have Cobra underpinnings. The Daytonas were essentially Cobras with a more aerodynamic hard top body.

@gta89mike: 1967 Toyota 2000GT: original price about $7,000. Auction price for a mint car: $200,000.
