BMW to offer engine start-stop feature

BMW will introduce a start-stop system that cuts the engine when stopped and restarts it as the driver comes off the brake, according to the U.K.'s AutoCar magazine. Various four- and six-cylinder models will offer the system, including 1-, 3-, and 5-series variants, the report said. Such technology is already on various Citroën models, and many hybrid cars periodically stop and restart their gas engines, albeit in a slightly different way. Apparently, BMW expects the feature will reduce fuel consumption by around 5 percent.
