Volkswagen to name new compact SUV in July

In March, we reported that Volkswagen was considering five possible names for its Golf-based compact SUV. We also reported that the automaker had turned to the audience of Germany’s AutoBild magazine to vote for the best name for the car. Today, Automotive News is reporting that VW will announce the winner of the contest — which ended earlier this month — in mid-July. As previously reported, the possible names for the Volkswagen Concept A-inspired vehicle are: Nanuk (Eskimo for small polar bear), Namib (a desert in Namibia), Rockton (a play on the word “rock”), Tiguan (a combination of the words “tiger” and “iguana”), and Samun (a hot desert wind that blows in North Africa and some Arabian countries).

  1. thought it was Marrakesh or a “wind” name. Rockton sounds like the name a Korean Manufacturer would use so I doubt it will be that. Samun sounds bad but so did SHaran and that didn’t stop VW. I like Tiguan or Namib, which gets the Brad Angelina connection. Nanuk could be the outsider that makes it.

  9. VW has the worst names in automaking, so i expect no difference here. they’re almost defiantly awful, as if to say, F english speakers.

i mean, “touareg”? when you have to buy ad time for a self-parody ad showing people struggling with the name, you’re just being jerks about names.

  12. Land Rover almost always picks place names for its colors but at least it picks names that can be prenounced in english. Originaly all Land Rover colors were named after different counties in the U.K. but now they have exspanded to include many different geographic place names around the world.

  13. I heard from a good Source at Wolfsburg that this will be called the VW Jism or Bukakke, depending on which one clinics better or flows off western tongues better.

  15. Its not going to look like this, the production modul will have a far more conventional SOft-Roader look to it a la Rav 4 etc.
