In March, we told you about a Newsweek report that indicated Ford was working on a retro-styled rear-wheel-drive sedan to compete with the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger. The automaker later confirmed its development team in Australia was working on a new RWD platform for its Falcon and Territory models, as well as other future vehicles. In a conversation this week with Drive.com.au, Ford Australia boss Tom Gorman said a new sedan to replace the Fairlane and LTD models could be released alongside the the next-generation Falcon some time in 2008. The new model is said to have a shorter wheelbase than the Fairlane and LTD. It would be based on the Falcon, but be slightly more luxurious. The vehicle could come to the United Sates, too, he said. “We want to be an exporter [...] I think that now is a very good time for us to do that. [...] And it’s at a time where the US is looking and where it’s going with its large rear wheel drive platform.”
Gorman said the Ford Australia could export 15,000 to 30,000 vehicles per year — “not 100,000.” It’s unclear how well a rear-wheel-drive sedan would sell in America, but that limited capacity would present an interesting problem if demand was strong.
While a specific timeframe has not been given, Gorman admitted developments were coming in the near future.
“Given the challenges being faced in the US it’s a great time to bring our resources and technologies even closer so we can really leverage – so that two and two is five, instead of both of us going off and doing separate vehicles,” said Gorman.
“The next year or so is going to be very exciting.”

The key words are luxurious and low quantity. So that means it will be a high priced halo car that few can afford.
Thunderbird - failure-high price
Soltice/Sky - success-value priced
GTO - limited success-high price
New Falcon = GTO
First automaker with a small, value priced, multi-engine option, 4 seater, rear drive handling platform will create and lead a new segment.

The ‘retro” name such as Falcon, LTD & Fairlane are still in use in Australia, so they are not retro there. If you weren’t so quick to bash Ford and actually read the article you’ll see that all they are saying is that Ford has a RWD platform to use for models here in NA, not that they are bringing any of those nameplates here.

A small 4 door based on the Mustang platform with the 300 bhp V8 would be a huge hit.
Why they don’t just do it is beyond me.

David E. I completely agree. Those Lincoln concept cars would have put Lincoln in a whole other class. It could have been a beginning of a return to their former glory. But no, we have ugly, badged-engineered Lincolns..

Renton is right, a small 4 door sedan with 300hp and rear wheel drive mated to a proper manual transmission would be a winner around $30K. TSX price and size but with rear wheel drive and 300hp? Put my name on that waiting list.

Thing2, My guess is they are keeping Lincoln at bay to keep the brand from competing with the Premier group of vehicles.
Myself, I would put all the Premier vehicles under one roof with Lincoln.

#11: They already did that. And failed miserably. So they took Lincoln out of the PAG, with the LS being the only thing that came out of it.

Hello Wayne,
What I meant was to sell all the Premier group vehicles under one dealership roof. Not the development under one roof.

What I don’t understand is why doesn’t Ford sell the same cars here that it sells in AU. The Australian Focus actually looks cool, and several other cars have much more style than the Fusion (yuck). I need to move to a different continent someday, maybe I can drive a car the way it was originally designed.

They can’t call it ‘Falcon’ in the U.S.. Pepboys owns the rights to that name on their tires. However, Pep Boys could work a deal where the car has falcon tires and would get a percentage of every car sold. Wait, what’s 1 percent of zero cars sold??

Is this a push by Ford to start selling vehicles built outside of the US by non-UAW employees (see Fusion/Milan) and wait for the union to break down and decrease demands fearing that Ford would become the next importer of their globally best cost-wise competitive vehicles built somewhere else but without the “UAW tariff”? Might this be a ploy (like the rumored $9+B investment into the Mexican facilities) to ask the UAW to change or die?

WHy bother. Ford motor will always play second fiddle to the General. I’d place money on Ford’s eventual destruction within a year or two once the Generals resurgence has wiped them off the map for good.

Rene Curry, I did consider the possibility of an upmarket Lincoln cannibolizing Jaguar sales, but I was thinking to pit Lincoln against Cadillac and then move Jaguar up just a bit like 1 or 2 grand and use that for more luxurious materials, better mechanicals, etc. But yes, Lincoln should be under PAG and then just rid of Mercury as it no longer seres the purpose it once did.
