Mercedes SLR wins top speed competition in U.K.

Less than a week ahead of the British Motor Show, the folks at Autocar magazine rounded up a group of supercars to see which could hit the highest speed for an official Guinness Book of Records entry for the “London Land Speed Record.” The test took place on an airport runway, which was cleared for the event. The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren took the honors with a record 175.7 mph. Also on the tarmac was a Ford GT which achieved 174.3 mph and a Corvette Z06 which reached a top speed of 167 mph. “The McLaren has the power, the technology and the stability to hit those high speeds with incredible control,” added Sutcliffe. “This is the fastest any production car has ever been driven legally in London”. Each vehicle was given a rolling start and the length of the City Airport’s one-mile runway in which to set the fastest time, 3 runs per vehicle. Cars entered the main runway via a slip road at 70-80 mph. Gallery after the jump…

  • Mercedes McLaren SLR 175.7 mph
  • Ford GT 174.3 mph
  • Porsche Turbo 162.6 mph
  • Bentley Flying Spur 157.4 mph
  • Corvette Z06 167.0 mph
  • BMW M6 162.5 mph
  • Alpina B5 155.4 mph
  • Shelby Daytona Cobra 159.7 mph
  • Holden Maloo 160.8 mph

The 911 turbo is the new one no less… I thought it was supposed to provide a new benchmark. Instead it is just as fast a (fatter) M6 and slower than the sweet vette.

I thought the Z06 would have been faster, but maybe they needed more room. That McLaren Merc is a badass car, its ugly too..

The SLR is a $600,000 POS! ‘Nuff said. Where’s the Veyron, or Zonda, or CCX, or Enzo, or LM460, or…I could go on for days.

The SLR costs MORE than a Porsche Carrera GT so that should’ve been included instead of the 2007 Turbo…

Its the only car that is 400,000 thousand more than the next competitor, I would like to see what the Veryon could do. if were going to compare apples more to apples.

What about the Kawasaki ZX-14 in that picture? It would blow the doors off anything in that competition. even though it’s electronically limited to 186 MPH or 300 KMH.

i totally agree : they should have tested more supercars… but just look at the CLS BRABUS ROCKET which broke the new limo speed record with over 360 kmh….

That test was a complete waste of time and resources. So… we’re gonna test a couple of cars.. let’s throw in a 5500 lb 550 bhp sedan, a 3800 lb 510 bhp coupe, 3900 lb 630 bhp supercar and couple of others.

They obviously think their readers are dumb and blind. I bet CCX would speedslap SLR.

I’ll take the Vette please, Thank you very much.
Also, word is out, there is a Super Vette coming out rated with somethin like 650 HP stock from the factory that will shut everybody up. Then when you actually comare apples to apples all you porsche/mercedes/insert any italian sport car make here/and what ever other sport car brand you wish to compare up against the Vette… the Vette, for the money and HP, will make those weep in shame period.

OK… so the Vette’s a nice car but please don’t tell us you’d actually take it over some of these monsters if it was on someone else’s coin.

The only thing nice about the vette is tha rear suspension. The rest of the car is tat (****) and thats at best. Beside the Mclaren Viper should easy out do the vette. can’t wait

Cracking on the Z06 like that shows pure ignorance.
Generally groups like this will test what ever cars they can get their hands on. It is likely they couldnt get the Bugatti.

i dont think anyone doubts the amazing performance bargain that is the Z06. What ppl criticize is the bland styling and the marginal build quality (”tailgater elimination system” IE roof panel flying off). I would take the Porsche Turbo in a heartbeat. It has been repeatedly called the best daily driver supercar on the road.

With Ford GT out of production, the choice is now SLR or Z06. Hmmm $600K or $60K, which makes more sense?

For all you pesants that are considering price in your opinions, shut up! This was a “SUPERCAR” test. Supercars are expensive. If you are choosing a 60K Vette over anything that costs 10X that, you are not ment to be a supercar owner/driver.

So Monkeyman, “Supercar” just means “super-expensive car” to you? I don’t think you are “ment” to own an SLR either, but tell me when you get one.

I wouldn’t get one. (see comment #4) And no, supercar does not mean just super expensive. It means super expensive, extreamly limited, Ultra-high performance, unique styling, illustrious brand image, dicotamy of form and function, and innovative design and engineering. Most of which I find lacking in the Z06. It’s a great performance car. It kicks ass on the track. And more often than not, will out perform a “supercar.” But these things do not inherantly bestow supercar status. As for the SLR, Paris Hilton ruined that one for all of us.
