Ford to deploy Capless Fuel Filler across model line

Ford’s Capless Fuel Filler — which was first put into production on the Ford GT — is set to debut across the company’s product lineup starting with the 2008 Lincoln MKS, the automaker announced today. The capless system is a “tangible example of how Ford is developing innovative product solutions to satisfy the unmet needs of consumers,” the company said. Capless fuel filler technology eliminates the inconvenience of forgetting to put the gas cap back on after fueling and saves time during refueling by eliminating the need to unscrew a fuel filler cap. It’s also better for the environment because no gas fumes escape. Detail photos after the jump…

Way to go Ford!

Forget about wide panel gaps, unreliability, poor mileage, violent rollovers, exploding rear windows, defective cam chain tensioners, failing transmissions, trunk releases that don’t work after 8,000 miles, and crappy dealers. What the world needs is a filler cap that doesn’t have a cap.

I see great things in your future!

Ok I am in no way a Ford fan I think they are way out of touch usually, but I kind of like the gas door idea. Its a small thing granted but when have we seen ANYTHING unique out of them in a while? One step in the right direction is better than no steps.

It’s a nice improvement as long as I still have to pop a dmall door to gain access to the filler neck for security.

We all want to hear some interesting news from Ford, however. This ain’t it, Bill. Announcing that you’re going to use that Five-Hundred platform in a bunch of cars in the future didn’t help one bit.

For many vehicles, if you don’t have the gas filler cap on tight, the engine light goes off, and you must take your car to the dealer to reset the computer.

Capless will eliminate these ocurrences.

Jon, since the birth of OBD II emmision controls on cars, this is a very common occurence. The computer sees a “leak” in the fuel system and sends a code. Some of the newer systems actually have a light on the dash that says gas cap off so you know you just nned to tighten the cap.

My Volkswagen Golf does that… so do other Volkswagens. but I believe that if you tighten the cap more, the light turns off.

I can only speculate as to how envious the engineers at BMW are right now. Ford should be really, really proud about this dramatic engineering feet. Because of ford’s remarkable achievement, I have vowed to buy a ford mustang instead of the Audi RS4 that I was going to buy. Seriously, I simply can not comprehend how much the capless fuel filler will change our lives…I don’t think anyone can. I have to run, I need to alert my friends and family overseas to only buy fords from now on. My life will never be the same…and neither will yours.

how the hell is that innovation… I purchased a gas cap that has a retractable circular door that I just put the nozzle in and pump my gas without having to take the cap off. And when I pull the nozzle out it automatically hinges back shut. You can purchase this wonderfull inovation at auto zone for 8 bucks. Ford should just buy these in bulk and put them on all their cars!

Ford should be pouring there resources into quality and reliablity …. not gimmicks. This is why, Bamf, we cannot understand this idea. They need short of a miracle to turn their company around. I strongly doubt that a capless fuel filler will convince car buyers to purchase a ford. Oh well, props to the Ford R&D department …. at least they are not sleeping.

No fumes escape? Really? Then where does all the air in the tank go when it is refilled with gas? Most pumps now have gas tank-air returns that capture that air, but if this system is a one way valve, as the picture and article suggests, then that tank certainly does emit a tank full of fumes every time you fill up.

As a side note, if you’re not attentive enough to put your gas cap back on, what makes you think you deserve to drive a 3000+lb vehicle on public roads?

Upon looking at the pictures, unless ford decided to paint the capless “gashole” same color as the body, it seems to me that the actual hinge is BEHIND the fender.

Alot of people thesedays have “Service Engine Soon” light come on because of loose gas caps. Most VW/Audi/Nissan/Toyota/Ford/GM Dealers actually do not tell the customers, but charge to reset the light.

At two local Nissan dealers, they would replace valves in the gas line system. I personally know of few people who were tricked into this service. The replacement also happens to have a new gas cap… Scams…

Getting back to the topic. I am sure that most people do not have pleasent experiences with their FORD dealer service. I owned FORDs for 10+ years, and then gave up after being tricked into spending $$$ everytime something was wrong with the car.

All I am saying is that God help you if your high-tech hinged “gashole” in your 2008 FORD fails. I don’t think it’ll be as cheap as buying a $10 replacement gas cap (which is what happens now). If ford had responsible and moral dealer service, I would see this as a problem, but this seems like an invention that will milk more money out of out-or-warranty customers who have “check engine” light on.

Going back to the FORD dealer, a friend had an older ford, and her car didn’t start. over the phone, I noticed that the started rolled over fine (meaning battery okay). She had it towed to the FORD dealer, and they replaced her starter ($350)! few days later, same problem, they replaced her battery and alternator ($400). Few days later, still same problem. I then went over and noticed that the distributor cap was ancient and cracked. After $70 for new distributor, rotor, and spark plug wires, car was fine. The FORD dealer tried to milkalmost a grand over a common problem as cracked distributor cap… Shame shame.

All I see when I see this “body-integrated-hinged-gashinge” is future FORD dealers milking customers to replace one of these “faulty” doors…

Yes, I do not like FORDs.

Will other manufacturers follow this example? Once they see how much money ford makes on charging out-of-warranty customers to replace faulty units, of course they will all follow.
