Iroc (Scirocco) Concept

August24

Following a leak early this morning, Volkswagen has released the first official images of the Iroc Coupe Concept, which will be exhibited at the Paris Motor Show in September. The car previews the 2008/2009 Volkswagen Scirocco coupe, which is rumored to go on sale in twelve to 18 months. The car will feature a TSI engine, DSG gearbox, front-wheel-drive, and hidden B-pillars. Rumors have placed pricing around $25,000. Gallery after the jump…

  5. The grille looks a little overdone, but the overall concept is pretty slick. I would like to see a six-inch increase of rear overhang — just my personal preference.

  11. To me it jumps out as a hard top S2000.
Or a Civic that rear ended an S2000.

When is something truely new going to appear? I like the way this looks, but just once I’d like to see something that is on the edge of design and not butt ugly. The new dodge cars really are scalled down front clips from the trucks. Scion is the last thing I remember that seemed new, but it looked a lot like the Honda Element.
Scion and Element are ugly as sin. The new mini seemed fresh, but it really was recycled.
So that leaves the “new” at the time bug. Which seemed too tall from the side and too wide from the front/rear.

I guess I’m hard to please.

  12. The front is a bit of the Evo X, on the whole looks good, interior is awesome….but I am sure this would be way toned down in production form.

  13. I see some EVO X & Golf in there. Oddly, I don’t see a lot of the old Sirocco, but it looks great none the less. Wasn’t the Sirocco a fastback anyway?

I love hatchbacks, so as far as I’m concerned, the more they bring over the better. There are soooo many sedans/coupes out there, who cares for any more. They are all so boring.

  14. Fairly disappointed actually, If this is the final design that is. I was hoping for something a little more fastback and a little less Golf revisted. Oh well, we’ll just have to wait for 3:00 pm

  16. The rumored retractable hard top will be top shelf material I’m sure. Very driver oriented with nice matte aluminum up front. THE VW SPORTS COUPE IS BACK!!!
I wonder what the engine options are. I would hope the most innovative engine of the year, the 1.6 twin-charger will be the base, but the whole twin-charger idea should makes its way up the engine line to the halo 3.2L powerplant and the up comming 3.6L. Let’s hope that VW gets this right when they price this one, obviously higher than the Passat since the underpinings and some components are derived from it.
Does anyone know why it took VW two decades to bring back the sport coupe?
Also, I highly doubt that VW would steal design characteristics from those lesser models mentioned above to re-create an iconic automobile. There is classic style elements and new fashion design in this car, and it seems to be purely a step forward for the VW design departement. It has the coke bottle shaped front end which we will be seeing a lot more these days I hope.
Georgeous car, I hope that the production model doesn’t stir too far from the IROC concept.
Please have an R-Line for this one.

  17. wait…. why is it called Iroc? Wasn’t that something GM used some time before this?
I like the concept, but the greeen interior is a little too much for me. The headlights looks like the Lancer concept, not totally a bad thing.

Comment by Adam, posted on August24 at 1:29 pm
  21. IROC is the International Race Of Champions
I’m not sure either why they would use that because of the immediate recognition of the IROC-Z by GM.

The auto industry has been waiting for a car like this, at last the new VW style is coming out. It is the peoples car company and I as well as most VW owner’s can appreciate the impact a car like this will have on other model lines.

  22. VW seems to be turning into MB, in terms of trying to fill every possible niche market. It’ll be a great for VW if it sells, but it seems like there oversaturating there market. The new look of the VW’s is good though

  23. Um, looks like another Golf/Rabbit hatchback to me… so what will be the difference between this and the GTI?

Comment by Joe Berkley, posted on August24 at 1:37 pm
  24. why why why!! they should have made the car more as a fastback just like corrado/scirocco rather than just a normal hatachback with lower roof. granted that it will be a lot lower than VW’s own too tall GTI, but it is a big disappointment for the great opportunity they had… maybe they feared it would be taking sales away from TT…

  27. The VW model line has been critisized by the auto industry for having a minimal model line, in 1998 it was oonly 3, the golf, passat, and jetta. Now they have introduced an SUV, and an answer to a question that nobody asked…the Phaeton. Now they are trying to re-introduce the ’sport’ coupe market which is very fitting for the demographics that they look at when to build a car…when people have money. In the early 90’s almost every auto manufacturer had a sport coupe, now they’ve all disappeared. With the addition of the Scirocco, the VW line will be one of the most simplest in the industry.
The difference between the GTI is that is a symbolic car for the company with emphasis on peformance and classic simplicity. The Scriocco will be the most driver oriented car the company has to offer while putting more emphasis on performance by offering larger engines and the new twin-charger. The price gap will also be relevant to that of a optioned-out Passat. With the same components as the GTI and Passat, the engineering aspect is more intensive with this car compared to the Rabit GTI.
I also hope it looses the hatchback look with a more slanted VW shape.

  28. [...] Actualización: Leftlane ha sacado más imágenes “oficiales” del Scirocco y se dice que será presentado el próximo mes en el Salón de París… no queda más que esperar. [...]

  29. I guess when i said they were oversaturating the market, i meant more of the smaller car and sport car markets, with the GTI, Scirocco, the Jetta, the Passat, the rabbit, and the bettle, not that any of them are really in the same type of market besides the GTI and Scirocco, they seem to have a lot of cars in this market and not as many as in some of the other ones.

Comment by Anonymous, posted on August24 at 1:58 pm
  30. OK, so you want the public to pay what, 30K or more for a lower and wider GTI? So far, the speculation about what engines will be used is interesting, but will they really be something other than the coporate 2.0 and 3.2? If people are paying that kind of $$$, they want something that is distinctive and DOESN’T resemble other cars in the line-up. I’ve got it! Why don’t they try to make it like an old Scirocco or Corrado? What a joke.

  43. The grill and nose looks like it’s some sort of Halloween Fun House Mask you’d see at a party. Frankly I’m dissapointed with VW on this design. I think they should go back to the Eos face. In addition it seems like VW took the Golf and just lowered it and elongated it. Then to differentiate this from the Golf they put this scary nose on it.Even the Green color accentiates “Fun House” look. All I can say is the new Volvo C30 looks a whole lot nicer!

[...] Green Scirrado (leaked Concept S) The newest images to emerge are said to be of the real Concept S (once referred to as the IROC concept) that will be shown at the Paris autoshow in September. The lime green colour is a little over the top, but the styling is very close to what we’ve been seeing in some of the other recent Scirrado images. 57. I understand that this was the original green color for the 76 Sirroco. OK that’s fine. However they need to lose the thick chrome nose surround. There was some previous pictures of a hatchback concept that came out last month that I liked much better. That heavy chrome with the green makes it look like some party jokers mask. It does not look like an aggresive sports coupe. Also it does not look at all like a Volvo C30. That car is frankly a lot more attractive than this.I like this interior but of course it will never make it to production.

They’re calling it IROC, but really it’s the new rev of the Scirocco (which later became the beloved Corrado.) Lost of speculation about price and engine, but it looks like it’s going to be great. As is typical with VW, we never know if or when the damn thing will make it to the States. Have a look at all the picts. It’s brilliant. I want it. [...]

  69. Whats the problem with all VW’s looking Asian now? I’ve owned several of both styles of older Scirocco’s,and loved them! America loves retro! Give me a new design that shows some of the old flavor, take out all the gimmicks, and I’ll THINK about buying more Volkswagens!
