Australian racing legend Peter Brock dies

Australian motor racing legend Peter Brock has been killed in an accident while taking part in the Targa West rally in Western Australia. “The back end just slid out and that was it, it was all over,” a witness said. “The car didn’t roll, the back end just slid out from behind him and slammed straight into a tree and it got him right in the driver’s door [...] he was going no faster than anybody else, and in control and it just slipped off the road.” Brock’s body was trapped in his crashed car for more than four hours. Brock, 61, had three children. “If anybody could handle a high-powered, rear-wheel drive car in wet conditions it was Peter Brock,” said auto journalist Peter Whitten. “It goes to show no-one’s invincible.” (Thanks to Stuart and Matthew P for the tips!).

Brocky was a great man on and off the track. You could not ask for a greater role model, he always had such a fantastic attitude. RIP Peter Perfect.

Can’t believe Brock and Irwin both leave us in the same week, a massive blow for Australia.

Is this the same gent who helped design the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe and the replica by Superformance? The Brock Coupe.

Yeah, I recently read an article on Brock a short while back. He was a pretty amazing guy. I hope he was havin one helluva race!
That does look like a Shelby Cobra Daytona. I also thought maybe a Datsun Z. But if Brock helped design the Daytona replica, I think that’s it. I can’t imagine what he has hopped up in that thing.

This was the Australian Peter Brock, not the American, ‘Pete’ Brock, designer of the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe. The two were friends, and when Peter crashed he was driving a replica of the Coupe. RIP to a great driver.

[...] The Australian auto sports community has lost one of its legends. (H/T Leftlane) Brock along with Sir Jack Brabham are probably the best known Australian racing drivers. [...]

RIP, Brock & Irwin. That’s some bad news for Australia this week. :-( Careful now, Hewitt, Crowe, Kidman and others…

this was a setup. That corner has been known to be dangerous for a long time. Peter was intentionally placed at that point in the race. His suspension must have been tempered.
