Spied: Clear shots of the 2008 MINI Clubman (R55)

Spy photographer Hans G. Lehman snapped some clear photos of a 2008 MINI Clubman prototype in testing in Germany. The Clubman is an extended wheelbase version of the second-generation MINI. It will have a tailgate that opens in two parts sidewise, each with its own window washer. While the automotive press continues to report that the car will have reverse-opening doors on both sides for rear-seat access, this is literally a half truth. The MINI will have only a single 'suicide-door' on the right side of the car, as first reported by MINI news site Motoring File. This poses a problem for the Japanese and British markets, where vehicles are right-hand drive. Apparently, in an effort to cut costs, BMW will not move the door to the left side for the U.K. variant. That's because it would require relocating the fuel filler and related systems. Those who have seen finished prototypes have expressed concern, but BMW shows no sign of changing plans. Gallery after the jump...
