Acura Advanced Sedan Concept

Honda today unveiled the Acura Advanced Sedan Concept at the Los Angeles auto show. “The Advanced Sedan Concept illustrates Acura’s commitment to modern design and cutting-edge style,” said John Mendel, senior vice president, auto operations.”With our advanced design team taking a significant role in shaping future vehicle design, we can expect upcoming products to reflect this progressive, forward-thinking styling.”

“We wanted to capture the essence of an ultra luxurious sedan but give it a striking, mysterious presence to create a vehicle with a dual personality,” said Dave Marek, chief designer, Honda R&D Americas, Inc. “The concept echoes this quality with its clean exterior lines, a wide, stance, high performance cues and key luxury accents.”

“The front of the sedan communicates power and luxury,” explains Marek. “The pronounced hood and large grille communicate performance, while the jewel-like Acura emblem captures the essence of pure luxury.” Gallery after the jump…

Thank God Acura/Honda made that concept. After a string of super sharp cars TSX, RL and TL, I was beginning to believe that Honda/Acura was getting design savvy, but alas we get a constipated boar.

There are some good elements though; the swollen wheel arches that appear to engulf the cabin. Origami-esque shut lines and a nice ‘presence’ in the vein of a Chrysler 300C. The split in the ‘U’ on the door handles is kind of cheeky, too.

This is the concept of the 2008 TSX, better get used to it. Proportions suggest rear wheel drive, and they’re not THAT bad - go look at a side view of a S2000; look familiar? Grille’s ugly, but it follows the same design theme of the new MDX.

Ugly as sin, but if the current bland RL looked something like this, Acura may have been able to sell more than 3 of them nationwide.

Concepts reflect the most EXTREME expression of a manufacturer’s intended design language for the next few years– naturally anything extreme like that will look like ass. Wait for the prototype cars to surface…

Stepping back to reality, however, it doesn’t matter what design Acura tries to float. They sell expensive FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CARS. It doesn’t matter how good their new designs look. Lets hope the suggestive rear-wheel-drive cues are something Acura plans to go ahead with from now on.

Burgundy, R. - this is definitely NOT the concept of the 2008 TSX. Acura’s website said it is a styling excercise to find out what the designers think a 2010 RL could look like, or something to that end.

12/01, 6:09 PM

Why did they do this? That is terrible looking. I know Acura wants to show it can actually style an attractive, aggressive car but this isnt the way to do it. The TL looks good, but other than that everything they make is dull or ugly like the MDX. If this is their future design direction someone needs to be fired ASAP. All of the GM bashers on here look up to this company? They are great with putting Nav, HIDs and nice sound systems in their cars, but styling has never been their strength.
