Mazda Nagare concept

Mazda used the Los Angeles auto show this week to unveil a new concept car called Nagare — (pronounced “na-ga-reh”) Japanese for ‘flow’
and the embodiment of motion.

Under the direction of Mazda’s new General Manager of the Design Division, Laurens van den Acker, the challenge given to the team was to “invent a novel means of registering motion in vehicles whether they’re moving or still.” Nagare also signals a “fresh design direction” for future Mazda vehicles, according to the company.

Nagare is the first of a series of design concepts – some closer to actual production vehicles than others – which Mazda will showcase this global auto show season, including Los Angeles, Detroit, Geneva and Tokyo. “Mazda doesn’t produce concept cars to spin its wheels, and while some are more forward-looking than others, we simply do not create pure flights of fantasy. We develop these ideas to demonstrate what we really intend to build and sell,” said Mazda design director Franz von Holzhausen. Gallery after the jump…

It’s beautiful, it reminds me of the Renault wagon that just came out as a concept a bit ago.

Well, I hope van den Acker has put someone on his team in charge of the bread crumbs, as they’ll need to find their way back to design after this exercise.

Reminds me of 1930’s Panhards, not The Future. Another futile design exercise. I like a car to be pretty and well proportioned, and this just isn’t. Too much whale and too little car. Lets save the whales instead… ;-)

“Mazda doesn’t produce concept cars to spin its wheels…”
.
No … like all manufacturers they produce concepts to tease us into thinking they will actually produce something interesting, then they deliver the same old ****. Most of the visual elements of this concept won’t see the light of day on the car lot.

The details on this thing are really interesting actually, and ORIGINAL for once. BMW flame surfacing, eat your heart out!

Points for pushing the design envelope, especially with the front & rear lights and guages inside but I really hope those side gille don’t make it to production cars. I’d hate to be the guy who has to fix the bodywork on this thing when it gets a dent!

Anyone have a guess as to what this thing would be called if some rapper blinged it out?
