2009 Porsche Cayenne

Many were skeptical when Porsche, which had only ever produced sports cars, decided to jump on the SUV bandwagon in 2003. A Porsche SUV seemed downright outrageous.

But the German auto maker proceeded undeterred and, if sales are any indication, the Cayenne has been a resounding success. It has exceeded sales expectations and Porsche firmly stands behind the model, saying it returns much needed financial resources to invest in its sports cars.

The Cayenne was revamped for 2008 with smoother exterior styling, a host of more powerful direct-injection engines and an optional self-leveling suspension.

The base Cayenne is motivated by a 290-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 engine. It is based on Volkswagen's famed VR6 but features Porsche-tuned modifications. It hustles the SUV's hefty 4,784-pound curb weight from zero to 60 miles per hour in 7.5 seconds, a very respectable number for this class.

Not many SUVs come equipped with a manual transmission, but remember this is not a typical SUV. The Cayenne comes with a standard six-speed manual and optional six-speed Tiptronic S automatic. All-wheel drive is also standard.

Seventeen-inch alloy wheels reside under the four fenders. Instead of a weight-adding performance-robbing spare tire on board, the Cayenne comes with a puncture-sealing compound, electric compressor and tire-pressure monitor to alert the driver when a tire loses air.

A plethora of electronic gizmos assist the Cayenne including Porsche Stability Management with anti-lock brakes, anti-slip regulation, an automatic brake differential and engine drag torque control.

Options include Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control and the aforementioned air suspension, which comes with Porsche Active Suspension Management.

Interior volume is good but not great when compared to many of the Cayenne's competitors. Tall passengers may find rear-seat space tight. The hatch swallows 19 cubic feet of stuff, 63 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

The interior is well appointed with most comfort and convenience items coming as standard equipment. Some of the options include a navigation system, four-zone climate control, expansive panoramic glass sunroof and rearview camera with parking-assist sensors.
