Ford today released images of Jaguar’s new C-XF concept car. As the name implies, the C-XF is a concept version of the forthcoming XF sedan. The XF will replace the S-Type in 2008, for the 2009 model year.
The C-XF has the same 400 horsepower 4.2-liter V8 as the S-Type R. The production model will be offered with a wide range of powerplants, similar to the existing S-Type. The production model will have a less sloped roofline, since the XF is intended to compete with the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes E-Class, rather than the Mercedes CLS. Gallery after the jump…

it doesn’t look like a jag that it should be…the ‘angry eye’ headlamps are cool…but not on this car. from the picture, its surfacing lacks refinement and details are too fuzzy…the car looks old already….comon’ jag. the lincoln concept has way better look and stance

This looks like it would be more at home with Aston Martin.. not really a Jag to me. I don’t recognize it - where are they trying to go with the brand here? I’m assuming they might be grooming Jag to replace AM after they sell it (out)?

That said, I’m also impressed with this concept - looks like it would stomp Audi and provide an alternative with personality for a change. Sorry to see that the roof line will be toned down, but all the same it looks like Jag isn’t as dead as I thought.

Keep going Ford, you’ve got a long way to go but at least you appear to be on the right track. That is, until you shoot yourself in the foot again next week with your latest brain-dead, focus-group inspired, bean-counter approved, corporate decision.

I like it. If jag’s always look the same, they become old and stodgy (like many lincolns have become old and stodgy) Eventually you have to break the mold and set a trend. It’s certainly been succesful for Cadillac with what amounted to a left turn in styling. Same for Chrysler with the 300, BMW with the Bangle-bodies, even Mercedes has taken risks with styling. ’bout time Jag got with the program. There is value to the Joe Public saying “What’s THAT?” as it drives by.

I agree with most of you that it certainly doesnt scream jaguar…but that might be a good thing for this brand at this point in time…a new identity….the only problem i have with this concept is the curvy body panels in the front…i think they ruin the flow of it and could certainly do without….everything else looks really sharp though and hopefully production is similar to this

I like it. The grill shape is simular to the Series I XJ6/12 which is the only reason for it being that shape because the designer responsible for this look was recently interviewed in the publication International Design. He stated that the Series XJ6/12 was the reason he became interested in automotive design and why his goal was to design for Jaguar.

The front end is a bit too last-gen Mercury Cougar-ish for my tastes. But I’ve always been a fan of the current Jag front ends…the only redeeming part of a curent Jag exterior. Put the ‘07 S-type front end on this (make sure there’s that hood ornament!) and I’d love it.
But I’ll never afford a car like this anyways, so screw my opinion

They’ve been sticking with heritage for 10 years and look where it got them? A brand new aluminum XJ that people can’t recognize as new. I like the new direction, though really the headlights scream ‘99 Cougar to me. It’s also a cat, I guess.

I made several of the same criticisms listed above when the first teaser shot came out, and was jumped on for implying that Jaguar should maintain heritage details and some evolutionary cues. From the looks of this concept, the only evolutionary styling elements seem to have evolved from Aston, not Jaguar! The headlight and grille treatment are most disturbing to me, as they were on the new XK.. and that hard curved line following the hoodline from the windshield down to the bumper is unfortunately a production reality.. look at the S-type mules again and you will see it plain as day

Jag has almost always been about ‘heritage’. I think that has been one saving grace for them, and the fact that Ford has kept them alive.
I dont mind the looks of this car. If the performance is as edgy, I’d say they probaly have a nice little successful car on their hands.

It’s about time Jaguar has changed up it’s designing more, it started with the new XK and now they are following thrrough with the rest of the line up, for those of you saying there is “no jag here”, wait until they come out with more models that are similar to this and the XK, then you can stick your foot in your mouth. I like what they have done to spice things up at Jaguar but I wish they could fix the grille because it it destroys the smooth flowing lines of the car. They could have done it in a better form like what Pininfarina have done to the beautiful Maserati Quattroporte.

Why, oh why, would any designer put a aero-diffuser under the bumper strike face to mimic the ‘ground effects’ of a race car on a luxury sedan? Show car masterbation, perhaps?? Downright childish.

Now that I’ve seen these new photos, I have to say where I really liked this concept before, I’m starting to grow attached to it now. Striking inside and out, though obviously the interior will need a form more functional than the current artistic exercise. I’d say keep the blue hue lamps and just tweak the ergonomics to be a little more recognizable. (I know.. it won’t happen, but damn those interior lights would be nice.) Definitely looks like what Ford needs to shake things up with Jag and the competition. 04focus it right - it’s time for Jag to try something new.

akurei14 : Jag’s been able to get that major complaint under control thanks to Ford’s support. The issue these days is that the brand rotted away so no one has bothered to notice it’s a good car now. Who can blame them? The current Jaguar brand has all the personality of a bowl of grape nuts cereal. The XK just doesn’t fit - a production XF would keep it company as the Titanic that is Jaguar begins to sail in the right direction.

yeah, the grille is a bit odd– too upright at near 90 degrees. If they could angle it back a little bit and less depth in the grille, it’ll look right.
Overall, its just perfect. Almost Austin Martin’s twin. I know the interior will never make into production. Hopefully it will look like bewteen this and the XK coupe’s interior.

I honestly thought this was a concept from Buick at first glance. If you replaced the front side vents with portholes it would look right at home. Even the taillights have a Buick look, not to mention the grill and placement of the circular emblem. Its a great looking car, I’m just not so sure that it speaks Jaguars language.

This is too funny. Geez, the ONLY thing Jag had of any value to differentiate itself from other luxo brands was it’s design heritage. This car is not ugly, but it just doesn’t look like a Jag. Other drawings I’ve seen were better. This car would be a perfect Acura or Mercury, not a Jag. It also is painfully evident that it’s the same basic car as the Lincoln above.

Hrm… looks too much like the old original Iosis concept (became the new production Mondeo’s design “look”) for Europe. I love the Iosis concept but it hardly screams Jaguar to me, even with some of the “minor” Jaguar-esque interpreted detailings (i.e. grill shape, cat’s eyes headlights, gunslit taillights) to better distinguish it from the Iosis philosophy itself.

aiight aiight, I agree that this concept doesn’t show a lot of Jaguar heritage design, but i wouldn’t be suprised if the production model does show a little more of that. frankly though, i like this a lot. i think they’ve gone in a new direction that could prove profitable (and easy on the eyes for those of us who gotta see these puppies out on the road)…and most importantly, i see basically NO telltale signs of FORD’S heritage designs…which is a beautiful thing, because i think any self-respecting car lover would agree that Ford was never worthy to get its grimy domestic hands all over the classic beauty and elegance of Jaguar in the first place. can i get a WITNESS?!

The 90s had to be the era of the most stagnant, lame, and bleak designs in automotive history. It was as if the more simplistic a car looked the better. It seemed decadent Detroit wanted to emulate the young Japanese competition. The problem? The Japanese sucked at design and soon so did everyone (not many classics from this era, that’s for sure) Cars no longer where beautiful, had cojones, or character. Well, a decade has passed and some things have changed and are changing, but extremely slowly.
However, Jag did not fell in this stupidity and retained their heritage with styles that had weight and presence. By the late 90s the Jag XJ remained one of the most distinctive elegant cars of the era, and for such it still sold well despite its stigma on questionable reliability when compared to other luxury cars. Today when many are trying to again design cars with character, Jaguar is loosing theirs. The new XJ styling is a coward version of the last and for such passes more unnoticed than its predecessor and now instead of progressing the S-type they will replace it with “this”. I say “this” because don’t forget that this is a concept, the actual release will be a watered down version of what we see, in other words, you will get a Lexus. At least the XK still has some character to it and I hope it heads in the direction of the Jaguar R-coupe concept, now that’s what I am talking about.
