Toyota at the Detroit auto show will unveil the FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept — a two-door sports coupe that could provide clues to the next Supra. Toyota says the 400 horsepower hybrid would do zero to 60 mph in around four seconds, and cost somewhere between $30,000 and $40,000.
Power comes from a 3.5 liter V6 coupled with the electric motor used in the GS 450h. The car seats four and has a 50:50 weight balance. Gallery after the jump…

A hybid V6 with 400hp, 0-60 in around 4 seconds all for 30-40 grand! Wow, I’ll take that. That’s zo6, Porsche, F40. performance & the Toyota will get 20mpg and be reliable. Where do I sign-up.

2) It’s a Hybrid. When will people wake up to that scam?
3) It’s ugly & childish-looking. I used to doodle cars that looked just like this before I learned to draw freehand. Looks like someone had a ruler glued to their hands as he was forced to design the car.
4) It’s a Toyota…

Steve Bossel-> horsepower means nothing unless you consider the car its moving. It’s a toyota, so everything is probably made from plastic! It would have to scale in at under 3000lbs to get 4 seconds with 400hp.

Here’s the distinction between Toyota’s concept cars and others—they have the means of making come to fruition, and the engineering prowess of making a massed produced vehicle that’s livable as a daily driver. This design would do and sell well on the market, and the theme is consistent. You have to hand it to Toyota for investing substantial sums of money into R&D.

With the FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept, Toyota is staying true to its roots by being a reliable, economical, and evironmentally friendly company, that is now bringing back power and speed to cater to the enthusiasts that Toyota once had. This will allow Toyota to furter dominate the auto industry, that it already has a stronghold on.”

There is a difference between design and styling. I’ll repeat that again, design and styling are NOT the same. Design has an intention, a purpose, and solves a problem. Styling is important too and fits into the design, but it is not the first and only priority. Not original? Why? Correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t really seem to remember any hybrid concepts with a unique folding roof with that sort of performance. Sure it’s not revolutionary, but it is uncommon. Achieving complete originality is an incredibly difficult task because whatever you do, you can be almost certain that someone else has done something similar. And while making remarks, please try to make sure you back it up with a proper reason or explanation.
Anyway, I personally love the interior. I would imagine the front bumper area is probably *designed* to enable enhanced cooling to the brakes and such. The rear seats which are virtually inaccessible to adults are useless—why not use the space for something like storage? Having said that, I think Toyota was thinking about a wider audience when they designed this car. This, for me, isn’t the new Supra, but something new altogether.

A concept should look so good that even the watered down production version (w/o 26″ wheels, ,million$ paint or expensive LEDs) will be desirable and this car is not good looking enough to be a production car. And what a surprise, they copied the basic design profile from a high end German mark, the audi R8. That diverting center crease on the hood is right off the Celica, the front and rear ends look like someone is trying real hard to find a fresh look, but not a executing it.

But Toyota will never build something like this.
Why? Because it would not make them tons of money.
Toyota is only after the money. For them it does not matter if their cars have soul, inspiration, looks, desirability or even performance.
Toyota is THE bland-mobiles utilitarian company and that will not change.

Perhaps borrowing somewhat from MHW’s comment, I have seen nicer front ends on those highway snow plows where the plow is jointed in the middle. I think the jointed feathure then allows the driver to set the plow at different angles. The other angles of the car are OK.

Freshly funky, a bit too “anime” for me to take seriously. I like the rear taillights/deck spoiler, but the rest needs toning way down. The hub-less steering wheel deserves further research (where’s the airbag).
But I’ve already seen some preproduction, or prototype photos of the next Supra. It looks really sweet, not Ferrari 599 sweet but still tasty.
This is pure concept and shouldn’t be taken as more than that.
Also Lexus easily made in America because they cost less than comparable Mercedes and BMWs of the time. Now it is about even and Lexus is still holding on because they are generally less costly.
