Are all of you aware this engine makes over 493 horsepower and 738 lb. ft. of torque? I hope you all know that. I also hope you all know it goes 0-62 mph in 5.5 seconds. But I’m mostly focusong on that 738 lb ft. Incredible.

This V12 seems to be a scaled up variant of the current 4.2L V8 TDI, which is rumored to replace the V10 TDI as it produces more power anyway.

Other considerations in torque generation are, obviously, stroke length and compression ratio as well as the amount of turbo boost used.

Weird, as the Dodge Ram has a Diesel I-6 and it produces a monster 610 lbs-ft of torque but “only” 325 horsepower…and most semi trucks use an I-6 layout too, yet they need to haul up to 80,000 lbs or so. Did I perhaps miss something?

If it meets Euro 5, then it will meet EPA Tier 2 PM emissions requirements. However, Euro 5 allows for roughly twice the NOx emissions as EPA Tier 2 Bin 8. The audi will either have to use narrow angle direct injection or use a urea based exhaust aftertreatment.

The V-12 TDI engine makes less than the AMG v-12 Biturbo on account of the fact that it uses a 60 degree V (compared to the AMG’s 90 degree). This was done on purpose to limit the torque output as few gearboxes can handle more than 1,000NM (notice AMG “limited” theirs eh?).

BMW does the same thing with their inline 6 engines. An inline configuration produces the least amount of torque out of any engine design presently used. This is smart on BMW’s part, as they can increase power output (Hp, Ps, Kw, whatever you use) with out sending torque output (lb/ft, N/M whatever) to unusable levels.
