The next-generation Audi TT — which was unveiled earlier this year and will come to the United States in 2007 as a 2008 model — will be offered with an optional diesel engine, according to Automotive News. An Audi spokesperson made the announcement at a press event in Austria. Two years ago, Audi prepared a diesel version of the first-generation TT, but decided not to produce it because the “remaining life cycle was too short to recuperate the investment,” the spokesman said. Audi has not specified which engine it will use for the diesel TT. The car is expected to be unveiled around the same time as the 2007 Audi TT roadster — either late this year or early next.

This is HUGE!!! I think that LeMans win this year is really made some big points for Audi in the Diesil Dept. this year and they are starting to market heavily on it. I definitely will be considering one of these for my next vehicle.

i agree. I think the R10 is going to catapult diesel into the mainstream. And a TT TDI would be the perfect road car to showcase the sporty potential of the diesel power.VW has a 2.0TDI that makes 170hp and 258lb/ft and gets 35 city and 53 highway, sounds good to me. I assume that is the engine they would use unless there is a new one in development. They could also stuff the VW V10 TDI into the R8 sports car, im sure it would be more then able to do the job. “Its powerful five-liter, 10-cylinder engine boasts 310 horsepower at 3,750 revolutions per minute and offers impressive pulling power with 553 lbs-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm.”

I hope it’s a bigger engine (or a more agressive tune) than the standard 2.0 TDI (at least as a further option), 170HP isn’t a whole lot for a car like the TT. Still, as long as it’s nice and responsive, it doesn’t have to be very fast. Fun + Style + awesome mileage = success if you ask me.

170hp sint alot but look at all that torque! that should move it just fine. VW tuners have been getting 350lb/ft out of the older 1.9l TDI. i dont doubt 400lb/ft out of this engine

In the next 2-3 years there is going to be a flood of great diesel cars in the US. I can’t wait till the diesel V8 gets here in the new Range ROver.

Bring on the diesels!! This one looks to be a beauty… something that’s previously been unheard of in diesels the US. Hey Detroit, do we need to spell it out for you?

VW should also put this 2.0 TDI into the GTI. i know its nearly the same as the Rabbit but the GTI has better brakes and suspension, that plus the sportier exterior and seats/interior bits would be a hit. price it at $20k and they couldn’t build enough of them. I firmly believe the reason diesel cars haven’t taken off here is because all the diesel powered cars are boring. The Jetta and Passat are nice cars but dont exactly scream excitement. And to find another diesel engine your going to need to look at a truck or SUV. Though i think MB is bring some diesel cars over in 08. VWAG deff needs to expand the diesel lineup, Audi A4, A6, TT TDIs. Maybe a VW Eos TDI and deff a fun to drive GTI based TDI. That would put VW right at the front of the corporate gas mileage average thingy.

The question is….would you all be willing to pay $1500-$2000 premium for ‘diesel’ engine over faster, generally more powerful gasoline engine. I think the gas price needs to go up a bit to justify the price difference.

Rather have a SLK or Z4 with diesel. This car is front wheel drive (Boring) and prabably can only handle the torquee with the four wheel drive setup which is also boring complicated and expensive. Wait for the SLK 320 CDI Bluetec. Should be good fun

#13 Most of the European diesels lose nothing in terms of speed or acceleration to gas counterparts – maybe a second or two off the 0-60 time, but that’s not important for most drivers in most conditions. Almost nobody drives their car at the full extent of its max potential.
Power doesn’t make the difference either – torque does, and that’s where diesels have it all over naturally-aspirated gas engines. Check out the 300+ hp diesels coming out of Germany, or the 150-180hp diesels from most Euro manufacturers, which are often the most powerful engine in a model range.
Diesel is much more useful for American conditions than hybrids, and if the government would throw a few more tax breaks diesel’s way (instead of pouring all those boondoggle bucks into ethanol and hydrogen), the economics will work out.

“would you all be willing to pay $1500-$2000 premium for ‘diesel’ engine”
For this example im going to say i spent $1500 in gas in one year. with the EPA highway ratings.
VWs 2.0T is rated at 30mpg
$1500/$3.25 = ~461gal. x 30mpg = 13,846 Miles
2.0 TDI is rated at 53mpg
$1500/$3.70 = ~405gal. x 53mpg = 21,486 miles.
So it wouldnt take long to recover the cost of the diesel option. i drive about 18,000 miles a year so i would do it in less then one year. My dad drives a TDI jetta and the engine has more then enough power, his is the old 1.9l 105hp 140lb/ft version. the new 2.0TDI is much more powerful.
