Now I have gone through Honda and BMW (like early '80s 318i and 325i versions) fetishes in my life. But now I just want something that looks good but is reliable and has a low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). If you check Edmund's, the previous Aveo actually has the lowest TCO of any model by any make right now. The top 5 is Toyota, Scion, Honda, and the Chevy Aveo... with the Aveo at #1. The new model might not retain that position, as it is larger and more expensive, but I bet it stays near the top with the best of the Japanese cars. So as far as reliability, depreciation, insurance, and the price of the car itself, the Aveo is scoring big.

Now that they've changed the styling, the new Aveo looks much more bold and perhaps more masculine than the new Yaris. As far as cost, once you actually price each out at what consumers are actually paying at the dealerships, the Aveo sedan costs $800 less than the Yaris hatchback and something like $1,500 less than the Yaris sedan. Ouch! The Honda Fit is even less competitive on price.

Some American cars depreciate rapidly, but the first Aveo bucked that trend (hence the #1 rating on TCO). One of the main reasons for buying Japanese is that they retain their value, but since the Aveo does too, that's a moot point... can't say that for the Hyundai Accent or Kia Rio.

All in all, I rate the new Aveo a 4.7 or so out of 5. It looks like a subcompact blend of a VW Passat and a Nissan Altima, and is the only tiny car I can find that doesn't look like it was made for a girl (or a euro!) to drive.

The above referenced "European press" can have their Yaris. Honda and Toyota have done a lot for the automobile industry, but in this case the Aveo will cost me less in more ways than one.

Here's a little tidbit of info that may hurt the Aveo's safety rep.

"On the safety front, Chevrolet installs dual-stage front airbags and side-impact airbags, but there are no side-curtain airbags like in the competition. "

"Yaris and Fit are in another league they are like 10000 times more relaible nad better overall cars than the aveo"

Both are brand new and therefore cannot possibly have reliability data.

I've spent time in Yarises, their interior sucks big time unless you load it up to the price level where Corollas start...in which case would be better to get a base Corolla. The Yaris isn't much smaller and it isn't much more fuel efficient than the 'rolla.

Oh, and this Aveo looks better on the outside too. It looks like a Chevy this time, and it has a more conservative and macho look to it. The Fit isn't bad though it isn't my style, and the Yaris is a funny looking bubbly thing with straight up Mercury taillights.

Performance and reliability cannot be judged for now, but the Aveo wins the looks contest hands down.

The Caliber got good crash test ratings. And it looks a hell of alot better doing it.

GM is leading the way in building the least safest vehicle on the American market. Kudos to them for putting in the effort. How about a nice big bonus for GM managment for being a leader in suicide machines

I would definitely stay away from this car if I were concerned about safety. The Toyota Yaris and especially the Honda Fit are much better in this regard. And the Fit is a hoot to drive too!

Thanks for saying what I wanted to, Ben—this Daewoo Gentra is one unsafe car compared to its rivals. If you want Korean, get a Hyundai Getz and increase your survival chances.

This car is the Daewoo Lanos, kalos and lacetti, these car were seen in Australia for a short period of time and when they found low sales holden changed the badges and now they sell as the Holden Barina, Holden, Viva. the holden barina (the little yellow hatch) had a crash test here in Australia and it got the lowest rating of any car in the segment, it may be cheep but its cheeply made i would not recommed it and they all drive like shit too.

Justin is correct. It's going to continue to be a hit with Avis, hertz and your typical GM fanboi.

Looks like the fanbois have a death wish with this one though...

Longer? Well, okay I guess. A new front and rear clip can add some length to the car.

Wider? Maybe...if you measure the flared wheel arches. Same belt line & greenhouse. I think the car looks good, though. Yeah, better looking than the Yaris. It looks like Chevy had some Alteeza influence for the taillights. Those wheels have to be the smallest size you can get on a production car in 2007. I guess it's worth a test drive if the dealership has a manual version on the lot.

GM has always had less than stellar crash test scores. Safety has never been a big priority because it doesn't make them any money. They'd rather sell you a 60 thousand dollar Hummer or Suburban so you can be safe in a crash
