  • A new generation OnStar feature that provides turn-by-turn navigation commands is automatically downloaded into the driver information center.

The fourth generation of the legendary small-block V-8 engine family is the power behind GM’s all-new full-size trucks, delivering segment-leading horsepower and fuel economy through advanced technology such as Active Fuel Management (AFM) and variable valve timing (VVT). A FlexFuel engine is available – and partnered with fuel-saving AFM – giving customers the choice of powering their truck with E85 ethanol, gasoline or a combination of both fuels.

GM’s fuel-saving Active Fuel Management bolsters the trucks’ capability with the segment’s best fuel economy. Highway fuel economy for models equipped with the 5.3L AFM V-8 now are estimated at more than 20 mpg for both 2WD and 4WD models.

Engine offerings include:

  • 4.3L V-6 (LU3), rated at 195 hp (145 kW) and 260 lb.-ft. of torque (353 Nm).
  • 4.8L V-8 (LY2), with iron block; rated at 295 hp (220 kW) and 305 lb.-ft. of torque (414 Nm)*.
  • 5.3L FlexFuel V-8 (LMG), E85-capable with iron block and Active Fuel Management, rated at 315 hp (235 kW) and 338 lb.-ft. of torque (458 Nm)*.
  • 5.3L FlexFuel V-8 (LC9), E85-capable with aluminum block and Active Fuel Management, rated at 315 hp (235 kW) and 338 lb.-ft. of torque (458 Nm)*.
  • 5.3L V-8 (LH6), with aluminum block and Active Fuel Management, rated at 315 hp (235 kW) and 338 lb.-ft. of torque (458 Nm)*.
  • 5.3L V-8 (LY5), with iron block and Active Fuel Management, rated at 315 hp (235 kW) and 338 lb.-ft. of torque (458 Nm)*.
  • 6.0L V-8 (L76), with aluminum block, variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management, rated at 367 hp (274 kW) and 375 lb.-ft. of torque (508 Nm)*.
  • 6.2L V-8 (L92), with aluminum block and variable valve timing, rated at 400 hp (298 kW) and 417 lb.-ft. of torque (565 Nm)** – exclusive on GMC Sierra Denali.

The engines are backed by proven Hydra-Matic electronically controlled automatic transmissions, including the proven 4L60 four-speed automatic, high-capacity 4L70 four-speed automatic and a new 6L80 six-speed with the Sierra Denali’s 6.2L engine.

Channeling the engines’ power into usable capability and a refined, responsive drive experience are comprehensively redesigned chassis and suspension systems. The chassis and suspension systems deliver a smooth and precise feeling of control, particularly when driving on rough surfaces or with a full load. The chassis and suspension also support Silverado and Sierra’s class-leading capability, including segment-best towing capacity of 10,500 pounds (4,763 kg) and a maximum payload of 2,160 pounds (980 kg).

An all-new chassis, with wider front and rear tracks and new coil-over-shock front suspension design, is supported by tailored suspension packages that provide smooth, sure-footed ride and handling characteristics in all driving conditions.

  • A new, fully boxed frame that is significantly stronger and stiffer – 234 percent increased torsional stiffness and 62 percent increased vertical bending stiffness – with a hydroformed front section, enhancing both the smooth ride characteristics and crash protection.
  • Wider front and rear tracks – approximately 3 inches wider (76.2 mm) in front and 1 inch wider (25.4 mm) in rear – enable increased stability, as well as a smoother, more controlled ride, particularly when cornering or with a full load.
  • A new coil-over-shock front suspension is mounted to the frame via a high-strength, precise attachment system for exceptional rigidity and delivers a linear, responsive ride that enhances the trucks’ fully planted driving feel.
  • New rack-and-pinion steering system delivers precise, responsive steering with enhanced on-center feel; it is mounted on the front frame section’s engine cross member, the strength of which virtually eliminates slack or vibration in the steering system to enhance its crisp response.
  • A Hotchkiss-type rear suspension with splayed shock absorbers – angled outward and upright – provides more controlled damping and is a key contributor in the trucks’ firmly-planted driving feel; it also enables increased payload and segment-leading towing capacities.
  • Exclusive Eaton automatic locking rear axle enhances sure-footed driving feel and instantly provides extra traction when needed.
  • Large-capacity brake system with robust apply system and standard next-generation Bosch ABS system provide shorter stopping distances, better pedal feel and quicker brake response
  • Standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control is standard on crew cab models (available on extended cab) – a first for the segment – and incorporates rollover mitigation technology; it works with the ABS brake system to provide greater driver control in all driving conditions
  • Range of 17-, 18- and 20-inch wheels with tailored body-to-wheel relationship.

The 2007 Silverado and Sierra are available with five suspension systems, each tuned to provide an optimized ride with smoothness, a greater feeling of isolation from the road and minimal body movement; all suspensions feature monotube front shocks. The suspensions include:

  • Z83 – solid, smooth ride
  • Z85 – enhanced handling and trailer towing
  • Z71 – enhanced off road capability
  • Z60 – maximum street performance (offered with 20-inch wheels)
  • NHT – maximum capacity trailering package

In a first for the segment, GM’s sophisticated StabiliTrak electronic stability control system is standard on crew cab models and available on extended cab models. Partnered with the new brake system and four-channel electronic brake controls, the system provides more precise, controlled ABS stops, as well as enhanced traction/yaw stability.

Silverado and Sierra are built on new, stronger fully boxed frames that are designed to provide increased crush protection during a crash. High-strength steel reinforcements are strategically located on the frame to enhance crashworthiness. They also feature new compatibility brackets that ensure better interaction with lower-riding vehicles during a crash.

Driver control is bolstered through enhanced dynamics, such as wider front and rear tracks, as well as more responsive suspensions – including a new coil-over-shock front suspension design and rack-and-pinion steering – that deliver smoother, linear and more precise characteristics for a more confident, sure-footed driving performance.

  • New, roof-mounted head curtain side air bags inflate to restrain outboard passengers in both seating rows, offering protection during side-impact and rollover events; they are sized specifically to all three cab styles and each has its own dedicated inflator for optimized fill rates into each curtain. The air bags are integrated into the chassis and body structures for enhanced passenger protection.
  • Dual-stage frontal air bags with GM’s passenger sensing system are standard on all models.
  • Segment-first front safety belt pretensioners with both front and rear crash sensors.
  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control system is standard on crew cab models and available on extended cab models – and is a first for the segment. Partnered with the new brake system and four-channel, four-sensor electronic brake controls, the system provides more precise, controlled ABS stops, as well as enhanced traction/yaw stability.
  • A high capacity brake system with a new, four-channel ABS system provides superior stopping capability. ABS is standard on all models and is linked to the StabiliTrak electronic stability control system to help mitigate the occurrence of rollover events.
  • Four-wheel drive models feature the Autotrac active transfer case, which helps keep the vehicle sure-footed in slippery driving conditions. When shifted to the “Auto” mode, Autotrac engages all-wheel drive traction automatically.
  • An exclusive Eaton automatic locking rear axle also helps provide additional traction when needed, particularly when towing.
  • A new Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist system is available and provides visual (LED lights) and audible warnings of objects behind the vehicle.
  • A revised and easier-to-use tire pressure monitoring system is standard on all models. It alerts the driver via a signal on the instrument panel driver information center if a tire’s inflation status requires attention.
  • A segment-exclusive factory-installed remote vehicle starting system is available on most models – a first for GM’s full-size trucks – providing customers with the convenience of starting the vehicle during inclement weather or other situations.
  • Power-adjustable pedals complement increased front seat fore/aft travel to enable smaller-stature drivers to find an optimized driving position.

DRASTICALLY better interior than the upcoming Tundra.

I am not a huge fan of the GM trucks, but the styling has gone too far with other makes, and I think that this ‘conservative’ redesign really helps to distinguish the truck from the pack… and I like it better than the others.

Offering 3 different interiors (that we know of so far) is awesome as well. name ANY other vehicle that gives you a choice from three drastically different interiors in the same vehicle! Color me impressed, although I like the lines of the GMC better.

I have a 2005 Silverado and I didn’t really like this at first but it’s definately growing on me. I may have to consider an upgrade here soon. And the 1500 tows 10,500 lbs, which blows Ford, Dodge, Toyota (yes even the new Tundra), and Nissan away. The payload is class leading too at more than 2,000 lbs. And the 6.2 liter can’t be touched in any other 1/2 ton truck and that is undisputable. Sounds like a kick ass truck to me!

Which interior is “luxury-inspired”? The one with fake wood looks cheap and tacky. The two-tone gray, while utilitarian, looks suprisingly good with a “tech” vibe. Few GM cars look so good, although some are improving.

Amazingly they sold well without the update, I imagine this will continue.

Stop with the US auto is going to go bankrupt. GM could stand to loose money for the next 15 years and not go bankrupt with all of the assets it posesses. Next Quarter GM will start posting profits (which by the way is why they are rated “BUY”.

Nissan and Toyota will never be strong in this segment for the same reason people won’t give up their iPods for Microsoft music players. In this case GM actually understands the buyers better.

NAW, #37, you’re wrong. While a console floor shifter is nice, as a truck buyer, I prefer the column mounted shifter, as it leaves me more space up front for gear. Console shifters are nice, but I wouldn’t necessarily buy a truck based on the location of the shifer. Say, a question for you, when GM “fold’s and die” as you hope, what will replace the $85 Billion a year impact on the economy ? Only the U.S. Government (Military actually)purchases more goods and service’s than GM. I’d kinda like ‘em to hang around, as they are a major driver of the U.S. economy…..:-)

Those “image” thing is soooo late 1990’s and early 2000’s. I mean, really, its so emabrassing for them where everybody (non-truck drivers) knows its dated to have that “gotta have a cool truck” phase!

The companies should stop designing the pickup trucks. I mean, stop for 20 years. Keep the interior all basic and all vinyl floorings and seats and the outside to have all primed bumpers and grille. Go back to 1970’s where the trucks were for WORK only!!

And with GM’s new vehicles comeing off the lines such as the new SUV’s and crossovers, these trucks, and down the line with a new CTS, and RWD impala, camaro, gto, and a pontiac sedan… its no wonder why the competition are setting up “war rooms” to do battle with these new and improved vehicles. Just face it.. GM’s battle plan is working..

8 engine choices? How in the world is the average buyer gonna choose between the 4 engines that are all 5.3L?
How is anyone gonna know if E85 fuel is gonna be a bust in the next couple of years? sheesh.

I own a 2003 Z71 Silverado (with plenty of wear on the rino liner jack ass)and I like it a lot. But I think this new rig is much better looking. By they way 60, the E85 engine runs on regular just fine. It doesnt have to have E85, its just capable of using it if it’s available and the driver wants it.

GM could have saved millions by just upgrading the last generation models with the new grilles and interiors. The new ones look like the previous generation trucks anyway. What’s the point? If you are designing a new truck, make it look like a new truck.

Is it just me or is having a option for rain sensing wipers but sticking them (expect for GMC with big engine) with a four speed transmission a bad idea? GM did this with minivans as well - class trailing transmission technology. MB has 8 speeds out there, Caddy has a 6 speed but the brand new pickups have a 4 speed? Could have helped fuel economy and performance.

GM doesn’t know what the meaning of helping fuel economy is, i mean hell, bob lutz even admitted that their only starting to build hybrids to help their brand image, not to help the consumer or the environment.

im so dissapointed w/ these trucks, they suck.

I think that these are going to be a huge hit. They have made a lot of innovative uptades to the interior (like the bottleholder in the door and the dual glovebox) and the choices for the cargo appear to be incredibly versitale.

At the moment, this looks like a great offering. Ford and Dodge need to really step up with the next versions of their truck, and I find it mildly humerous to see the new tundra deemed nearly obselete so soon. Given this is my opinion, so take it at face value, but I think toyota struck out on both its interior, exterior, powertrain, and cargo. The tundra will once again be left for the urban/suburban family.

Wow! GM has done a great job with these new trucks. Even with hihger gas prices, the new quality of these trucks will prove that a quality truck can still sell even if gas is $3 a gallon.
And, why is there a pic of the old silverado mixed in with the new ones?(3rd column 23rd row) :P

As far as everyones commets about the shifter… surprisingly, based on the markets perception that almost half of truck buyers are people that actually make the purchase for “perception” rather than necessity, the need for an optional floor mounted shifter is important. One of the reasons that the big three are trying to make their trucks more car-like is because of these types of buyers. As for the new trucks, while they all look sharp, unfortunatly they dont offer anything to bring people who werent already driving American trucks into GM’s showrooms. This is a nice product that already loyal customers will appreciate, however, all the people that were already considering foreigh vehicles will not really be reconsidering after these vehicles are released. Its going to be a very difficult road ahead for those of us in Detroit…

I’ll just say, the Silverado looks fugly. The Sierra looks nicer. But, besides all of this, Ford has just released the tow ratings and payload ratings on the ‘07 F-150. Tow rating matches, and payload rating has beaten both of these. Ford has a little to worry about, but not that much.

when you have a large market share as gm has in full size pickups all they wanted to do was keep up their share. I think these trucks are very strong looking and seem to have the best interiors I’ve seen on a pickup so far. I think as soon as people drive these trucks against the compition there won’t be any comparison.
GM keep up the good work!

I think they did a very good job.. The consumer demands choice right now, that’s the way it should be. The current Ipod style culture is not healthy for the consumer because they lose choice. That is exactly what GM has done. Put the power in the consumer’s hand. The trucks offer anything they could be looking for. There isn’t a reason not to buy these as opposed to some of the competition which do not offer certain features. I think GM is on the right track. This may not be a grand slam like many deem necessary (I don’t). But sometimes a home run is all you need and for GM right now, a score is enough. They just need back the confidence in their product that they have been losing.

Did no one read that all of these new engines choices (except the v6) will now have variable valve timeing (VVT) and Active Fuel Management (AFM). No other truck manufacturer has that combo. No one besides Toyota makes a 8 cylinder with VVT. In addition the new GM 6.2 liter will be available with a new 6l80e 6 speed auto. This with the AFM should help this truck get close if not over 20mpg for a 6000lb vehicle. I can get upto 15.8 @ 70mph on my current 6.0l 2500 CC Silverado. The 08 model year GM is integrateing a 6speed two mode hybrid into most of these trucks. GM designed, and is building it, DCX, and BMW will be buying it from GM and published articles say the Ford is begging GM to get it. GM is not going bankrupt, rather every other auto maker is probally scrambling to figure out how to compete with a GM 1500 with a 4.8l VVT AFM combo that should be approaching over 25 mpg highway. My sister has a Dakota that with a V6 that only gets 17 on good day. The only thing GM missed on this round is they need to release the 4.8 liter diesel that they have been working on and a larger cab option is needed like the Ram MegaCab.
