2007 Honda Civic Type S 3-door hatchback

06/29/2006, 7:49 AM

By admin

Honda today unveiled the 2007 Civic Type S 3-door ahead of its expected debut at the British International Motor Show in July. Type S is aimed at younger customers wanting style and performance in a 3-door package. The car will go on sale in January 2007. Gallery after the jump…

To give the Type S sharper steering response, improved ride and excellent cornering stability, the suspension has been specially-tuned, with revised spring and damper settings and a 20mm wider rear track. This broader stance, coupled with the deep front air intake and standard 17-inch alloy wheels, gives the Type S a particularly muscular, planted look.

Under the bonnet of the 3-door Civic sits either a rev-happy 1.8-litre i-VTEC petrol engine, or Honda’s highly-rated 2.2-litre diesel unit. Both engines produce a significant 140 hp and can be combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The 1.8-litre i-VTEC is also available with Honda’s automated-manual i-SHIFT transmission.

Inside, silver-stitched black alcantara seats and a leather trimmed steering wheel join aluminium pedals to set a very sporting tone.

The cabin itself is focused around Honda’s unique Dual Link dashboard design — first featured on the 5-door Civic — which places key information in the upper part of the instrument panel. This means that important data can be viewed without compromising the driver’s concentration on the road.

Although the coupe-like styling of the Type S might suggest compromised cabin space, the interior instead succeeds in providing a high degree of flexibility and passenger accommodation. The distance between the hip point of front and rear passengers (803mm) equates to that of higher segment cars.

The rear seats also incorporate Honda’s familiar one-motion, dive-down feature that instantaneously creates a flat loading space. This helps create a massive 485 litres of loading space — the same as the Civic 5-door. A centrally-positioned fuel tank located beneath the front seats, rather than impinging on the luggage area, also plays a key role in achieving this packaging efficiency.

Two model grades will be offered. As well as 17-inch wheels and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) as standard, Type S gets air conditioning, cool box, remote audio controls and curtain airbags. The Type S GT model adds a panoramic glass roof, dual zone air conditioning, cruise control, front foglights, retractable mirrors, and automatic wipers and headlamps.

The comprehensive passive safety features include double seatbelt pre-tensioners on both front seats as well as active headrests for protection against dangerous whiplash injury. Front and side SRS airbags for front seat passengers and ful-length curtain airbags are standard on all models. The instrument display also features an innovative seatbelt reminder for both front and rear seat passengers.

Honda anticipates a Euro NCAP result of 5 stars for front and side impact safety, 3 stars for pedestrian safety and 4 stars for child protection safety, making it one of the safest cars in its class.

The 3-door Type S will form the basis of the Civic Type R, which goes on sale in the UK in March 2007. The highly-anticipated Type R will offer greater sophistication without compromising the Type R philosophy of exhilarating performance through advanced engineering.

Aggressive styling, responsive steering, intuitive handling and greater in-cabin refinement will all be key characteristics. And although maximum engine power remains the same as the out-going Civic Type R, Honda’s engineers have further developed the 200 hp 2.0-litre engine.

The Type R will also have a GT grade, which will offer extra equipment such as dual zone air conditioning and automatic rain and light sensors.

I am sure Honda will not send it to the U.S. so those who hate it rest easily, hoever I am sad to not see it here. Would be great against the Ford Focus and those nast GM Ions and Cobalts

Who made you the authoruty on which cars are cool and which ones are not? If you don’t like it than say so and let others express their opinions. People a lot smarter than you designed this car and they know what they’re doing.

It’s only cool and/or good looking if they sell it in the USA in all trim levels INCLUDING the Type-R.

It Honda USA doesn’t, then I say it’s a load of ugly garbage.

Sorry. It’s already FWD. Give me a reason to desire your car, Honda. You can start by making it available to order for Americans.

Give me the 2.2L CDTI engine option, puh-leez Honda! 258 ft-lbs, 140 HP, and 45 mpg would be sweet in this hot hatch.

I agree with the posters that say we get screwed when it comes to car/engine selection in the states.

The Ecotec motor in the Cobalt is world class next to some little ricer from Japan. Honda has a LONG way to go before they match the sophistication of the Ecotec. It is so good, it is the basis for the Saab 9-3, a car that completely demolishes the competition (TL, G35, 3-series…etc)

Want a real motor? Buy a GM with the avialible 2.2 or 2.4 liter Ecotec. You’d be foolish not to

While I wouldn’t be in the market for something like this, with the success of the current Si here in the states, Honda could continue the momentum with this car. And with the demise of the Acura RSX, Honda could once again concentrate on being the spunky, youthful brand that they were known for.

I had a thought… like if Chris Bangle had worked for Honda, or if someone decided that what he’d done for BMW wasn’t good enough and Bangled the Bangled version of the Honda, like a Bangle Squared…. this is kind of what it might look like. I like it MUCH better than the old ‘05 designs, but good god. The rear end does look like it’s been through hell. Belongs more on an extended edition of TRON or something.

For years the CRX crowd has breathlessly waited, pinning for a new version of the beloved CRX Si to arrive . With the creation of this the Civic Type S 3 Door, the passionate and paitent have something to be thankful for. This vehicle is as close a match to the beloved CRX as anythinhg Honda has relased to date that approximates the old CRX Si. The new modern, if not futuristic styling is a bit heavy on the Battlestar Galactica side, but most will find the wheel spinning power, razor sharp handling and screaming 1.8 VTEC sound pairs nicely with the out of this world styling. Besides, once you’re behind the wheel and blazing it out whith the shift paddles flying, you won’t care what it looks like – you’ll care that it goes like hell, sounds insane and blazes every corner you throw its way.

In England we are definitely looking forward to seeing it in the flesh, it is an appetiser for the Type-R that is also being unveiled at the motor show. Funny that all the naysayers here are pretty much all anti-imports, pro-domestics. But I don’t have a problem with that. In fact, it’s a good thing that some people are still buying the generally inferior and cheaper domestic cars; it keeps the competition going and workers get to keep their jobs.

(I can’t believe a dude actually claims the Saab 9-3 is “demolishing” the G35, TL, 3-Series. Ahahah, talk about ignorance… The only thing it’s demolishing is its own reputation.)

When i first saw thisk car on photos i thought it looked strange, but when i got to see it in real life i was amazed how cool it looked. I drove it for some time and the handling is nearly perfect, you get really connected to this car, it feels like it’s built around you, like the feeling you get in a Subaru Impreza. Don’t judge this car by looking at photos, you’ve got to study it in real life.
