Top Gear has posted an in-depth look at the Jaguar’s new XK coupe and convertible, and its lengthy development process. The XK’s job “is to be in the 645 ballpark for comfort and civilisation, but still hang with the real sports cars when you push on. By which I mean base-model 911.” The reviewer, of course, is referring to the BMW 645Ci and the Porsche 911 Carrera. He says that while the 645 is “nice enough,” it isn’t “so very different from being behind the wheel of a 545i Touring.” The XK is lighter than a 6-Series or Mercedes SL “by miles,” and only a little heavier than a 911, “which has only six cylinders and a lot less comfort.” When it comes to the convertible XK, it “feels amazingly rigid. Run one side over a raised manhole cover at speed and you get the du-thump as front then back wheels go over, but no twisting after-shimmy. You can’t say that of many of the open opposition. ” (See also: our recent report on several future cars, including the forthcoming high-performance Jaguar XKR).
