Only eight months after the European premiere of the new Mercedes S-Class, sales of the sedan have topped 50,000 units. The new S-Class got off to a particularly successful start in its home market of Germany. In the first five months of 2006, the number of customers who bought the new S-Class exceeded the combined total of those who purchased the BMW 7-Series and Audi A8. The new Mercedes-Benz flagship model has been available in the U.S., its main sales market, since February. S-Class sales have been “far stronger” in America than the figures posted for its German and Asian competitors, says DaimlerChrysler. The most popular S-Class variant is the S500, which has been the choice of more than 40 percent of all customers since the vehicle was introduced.

What happened to all the people that hate the design? I guess their opinion does not count, the people that can afford the car are buying the car. Let me win the lottery. O lord let me drive a Mercedes Benz.

People HATED the redesigned 7-series and it became the best-selling 7 ever. Not so sure what the correlation is, but….well…..you know.

Thank you Steve. You’re so right, and your statement encompasses everything; for that matter. Everything….At least they’re not buying Lexus’; they’re hiding their nouveau riche for other occations….

As we all know, in the auto industry it is more important to be ‘new’ than ‘good-looking’. If looks were the hallmark, then – we can all agree – the Audi A8 would outsell 7-series, S-classes, and LS432s. But it doesn’t. Camry, handsome? Nope. Mazda6? Yep. … that said, obviously the new Merc is a hot ride. Ugly. But hot. (insert celebrity comparison here).

Dave – since the S600 is over $100k less than the rest of the entries there, its no surprise. Notice that the 760iL and Audi A8 aren’t even on the list

In total numbers (i.e. every car line, not just the top of the line cars), Audi outsells BMW in Europe and is close to Mercedes. Audi isn’t as well known in the US and thanks to the problems in the 80’s, its reputation was tarnished, but don’t worry, they are coming back and are selling more and more cars in the US.

The S Class exterior is amazing.
However, when I got in the car, it looked so much like a 7 Series interior I thought I was in a 2007 BMW 7 Series,(great car). So I farted, got out and shut the door.
