I don’t know much about the car but from an exterior standpoint the car is way too big to be sporty & I assume that’s what it’s supposed to be. I like the front clip… but, everything behind that has gotta go.

Is is just me or is Toyota just trying too hard to make a sporty version of their family car. The ‘02 Solara was nice, even with the euro lights. Then all hell broke loose and this Solara now looks like the result of a drunken night between a 6 series and an ‘01 Tiburon.

You can put all the lipstick you want on this pig and it won’t help. Toyota should just discontinue it and go back to the drawing board – The Celica convert may have been boring, but at least it wasn’t ugly to boot.

Anyone who hates on this car must hate the G6 convertible too. Since GM ripped off the Solara styling for the Pontiac. At least this car is buit with quality in mind. Not some cheap ass Plastiac…

I’ve driven a 2001 Lexus ES300, which is a similar chassis. That thing drove like a hovercraft. Understeer city. I simply do not see the point in paying $22,000+ for an understeering, underpowered, unresponsive front-drive boat with a convertible top. Oh yes–With leather. Couldn’t possibly forget that…
While other car manufacturers are taking risks to keep their low volume roadsters and sportscars on the showroom floor, Toyota offers us the Camry Solara.
Question: why wasn’t the Altezza left as an inexpensive Toyota sport sedan with a four cylinder engine so that Toyota USA could have a sporty flagship? WHY?!! I do not CARE if they sell more trucks and SUVs than cars. I want to be able to consider a good, rear drive sports TOYOTA. NOT A LEXUS!

Patrick,
You are right on in that I am very biased against this kind of styling. I personally do not like it.
The main source of my dislike is not just the styling. It is that Toyota no longer offers any true sportscars or sport sedans any more. The Corrolla XRS, Matrix and Camry Solara are NOT sport driving cars. Furthermore, neither is the X-Runner pickup truck!
The problem isn’t so much that they sell these cars– I expect they are all very good, reliable, high quality vehicles– it is that they offer nothing in terms of a real driving chassis at current time.
MKIV Supras are ludicrously expensive and MR2’s are ludicrously impractical for someone who at least needs some basic trunk space. Both cars are now very much in the older used market.
There should be more options than two aging used car models, two pretend sporty cars and one bloated hovercraft convertible that doesn’t even offer a manual transmission with its underpowered V6.
Now I’d like to see Toyota give as many options to people who actually enjoy drivers cars of all types as they do to people who think big pickup trucks and four wheel drive tanks are cool.
I don’t think that’s a very unreasonable request from an automaker that can afford to show off a bit.

How can anyone say this was not the most ugly car ever conceived, that weirdo curvy accent on the side and horrible rear end will put this one in the history books, if you bought one I feel sorry for you, but you have to deal with it sooner or later. Revel in it, that’s what I say, like the Aztec owners, they don’t care what other people think.

I am living in hell — *both* of my parents have this fugly POS. Not only is it unattractive … its the most uninspiring, boring, and unresponsive car I’ve ever driven. Its chassis is way to big for its drivetrain and visibility is abysimal. Gauging is so dated, even an Aries K seems more current. only one step behind the Aztec, Tribeca, Caliber IMO
Though it does makes my STi, feel a little more f4st3r.

I am reading all the comments that you all have written, and I am left with the impression that you are all jealous that your parents can afford to buy such a car and that you can not at this stage of your lives. Why not show a little maturity and be able to extend your focus and look at it through the eyes of someone over the age of 40? And by the way, when the G6 convertable cover is retracted there is absolutely NO trunk space. The hardtop convertable folds into the trunk, therefore rendering the trunk 100%unusable.So how can someone THINK of taking a G6 on a weekend trip? May as well take the g6 and a few backpacks. So give me the Toyota Solara any day, and while you are reading this, why not ponder how Toyota is doing compared with GM, Ford, Chrysler and the rest of the guys.

I have a 99 Solara with 154,000 miles and it has never been in the shop… it even has all it’s original lights…it handles pretty good and can be exceptional ask some of those BMW, Mustang or Nissan owners that have tried to keep up with me…The BMW and Muustang owners don’t stand a chance in wet conditions…my ex-wife has owned two vehicles during this time…GMC Jimmy…needed so
much work she had to get rid of it…She bought a BMW on a Friday and it was in the shop on Monday…Brother has a Mercedes S class….can’t pass emissions and he states every time they start the thing a new maintenance light appears…Sisters 99 300C shake, rattle and roll…no air …same for her and the other sisters Voyagers…That is the main reason Toyotas’ succeed…they run forever…I still have the original clutch…The newer car is not my favorite but considering the options out there i would take one…take a look at the Cardomain website and there is hope when done right…Toyota is about to discontinue this model for all the wrong reasons…a little style goes a long way…just ask the Chrysler guys… they have been selling mediocre cars based on styling and gobs of power

The Toyota Solara is not to big to be sporty. It has leg room (don’t need if your short) and trunk space which is a real plus unless you don’t need to grocery shop. Take it for a ride and compare it. I don’t own one yet but I’m going to.Good Luck on your other choices.
