2007 Toyota Yaris TS

09/28/2006, 2:53 PM

By admin

Toyota today unveiled the Yaris TS — a high-performance version of its compact four-door hatch. The car was first previewed in concept form in February. It is powered by a 130 hp 1.8-litre petrol engine with Dual VVT-i. Peak horsepower is achieved at t 6,000rpm and maximum torque of 173Nm at 4,400rpm. Working with a five-speed manual gearbox, it gives zero to 62 mph acceleration in 9.3 seconds and a top speed of 120 mph.

The Yaris platform has been adapted to give the TS handling to match its increased power and performance. Modifications to the suspension and steering make spirited driving more enjoyable. At the front it has a black mesh grille with a clear TS badge, darkened headlamp surrounds and a deeper bumper with integrated fog lights. The rear bumper has also been redesigned, with an integrated chrome-finished sports exhaust tailpipe and fog lights. The rear lamp clusters adopt an LED-style design. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels are fitted as standard and the body gains deep side skirts and a roof spoiler. Gallery after the jump…

130 hp??? “high performance version”??!!… Put the VVTi-L, then we’ll be at least in the “high performance” range.

That is not going to be challenging the mazda 3 anytime soon.

It’s a five door hatch not a four door

I don’t think Yaris is supposed to compete with Mazda3, more like with Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart (http://cars.ign.com/articles/711/711141p1.html)

I don’t know about you guys, but by no means is this “High performance” in any category. 0-60 in 9.3 seconds that’s re****ulous.
The Mazda3 is a sweet little 5 door and the Mazdaspeed3 is even cooler, to bad it’s not AWD.

Man, they should have put in at least a 150 hp engine, and then it could have reached any appreciable “performance”!

Ya, 9.3 to 60 isn’t all that impressive… Hopefully, the mileage numbers make up for the performance. Well, it looks pretty cool…

Yeah because you do 120mph everywhere and floor it from 0-60mph from every stoplight

um will this be in America? a 5 door hatch currently isn’t sold in the US.

You don’t get it, it’s “high performance” compared to a regular Yaris. Not to a M5, Veyron, R8 or something.

It’s not even High Perforance compared to a Scooter, a base Civic or a a Honda Fit, which goes 0-60 9.3 sec’s as well. Nobody expects it to out pace a Ferrari, but if they are going to do something like this they should call it the Yaris with an “Appearance Package”

You guys are comparing it to the wrong cars. It is NOT to be compared to the Mazda3, this is high performance compared to the base Yaris, a Fit, or a Versa. Compare it within its class and its an improvement performance wise, why are you all hating on an improvement? Props for more sportiness by Toyota here.

man, i have loved these cars forever. i hated the original echo sedan, but the hatchback stole my heart.

keep in mind that there’s probably a trd supercharger available for the engine in this car.

It’ll do well against cars like the Fit, Versa and maybe even give the Rabbit a run for the money.

We didn’t get the last generation Yaris T-sport here, so I have no reason to believe this one will show up either.

It’s a 20hp bump over the standard Yaris, which is good.

The car would probably make a good stock-class autoXer here.

Guys – this is a European thingy. Compared to Euro Yaris, this is a “performance” version. So cut it some slack. If gas was $8/gallon here, you’d be singing a different tune.

Brendino — you are right, there isn’t a 5-door Yaris available in the US yet, mainly because it would compete with the more expensive Scion xA and xB. However, those models are said to be discontinued for 2008 with no confirmation of what type of vehicles will replace them, so a 5-door Yaris is a definite US possibility to directly compete with Fit and Versa.

One question though.. is the 5-door on the same wheelbase as the 3-door, or as the 4-door? Hard to tell from these pics.

Give it four wheel disc and I would buy one! Return of the hot hatch FX16 GTS for 2007! make the 3 door version available with the 1.8 in the USA and you have the ultimate urban guerilla with an aftermarket that would explode! The 1.5 is too timid, give the US the 1.8 toyota! I like the AUDI-esque “TS” badging on the front grill as well.
