2007 Zhonghua Jinjue: China’s BMW?

02/22/2006, 1:54 PM

By admin

China Brilliance has unveiled the first vehicle that will be built at its new car plant in Zhonghua, which was set up with the help of BMW. The Zhonghua Jinjue was designed by Pininfarina in Italy, and is positioned as a sporty midsize sedan. It’s no secret Chinese automakers are becoming interested in the luxury segment, and while no plans for U.S. availability have been announced, we wouldn’t be surprised if it happened one day. See several images after the jump…

Not patting anyones back, infact IMO any car with 4 doors makes me yawn, but for having 4 doors it’s really not that bad…I dont know any stats on this car, so my judgement is strictly visually based…and IMO it’s looks better than camry’s and accords, and alot of the garbage I see built in america…

Mike, don’t be an idiot. For a struggling new upstart company formerly copying Japanese designs, this is a great start. Of course it can’t be on the same levels as the established players, but a good effort on their part.

“set up with the help of BMW”, “was designed by Pininfarina” How can they go wrong? I see hints of BMW, Audi, VW, Infinity, etc. They can do much worse.

I must say I am a bit partial to Pininfarina’s designs (hell, I am italian and own ferrariblog.net) but this car does actually look not too bad. It’s a bit too ‘classic’ if you ask me, but that’s pretty much what the customers of that particular market segment look for.
I am seriously curious as to how this thing will drive and what its price will be!

Damn! that car is hOt! I think that is actually one of the better Pininfarina executions for a sedan. Yes, it reeks of 5-series, but aside from the odd lamp detailing, this is a sharp 4-door.

Do you think Pontiac wishes they had a car like this to sell? I do.

do i really hear that from commenters here?

get real, folks. the last 10 years of not paying attention to where the stuff you buy comes from is OVER.

and that includes cars. if you believe “free” trade is a good thing, i hope you’re independently wealthy and not concerned about the complete destruction of our indigenous manufacturing base.

for the rest of us, cars like this are the beginning of the ultimate battle of the US versus china. period.

I do agree with Jim. If the Chinese can build a car that is well built, stylish, has a good warranty and is priced below all competitors our auto manufacturing will be in serious trouble along with the Japenese automakers.

For those that think it cannot happen continue dreaming.

Thats always the argument from people who don’t have the brain power to formulate a legitimate argument. ie. immigration – we must be racist to want secure borders.

The reason the “indigenous manufacturing base” is collapsing, at least as far as cars (and American-grown cars at that as a number of other countries are creating car factories in the states) is because the cars they build, on the whole, suck. Sure, they’re (or at least Daimler Chrysler, and POSSIBLY Ford) starting to get their act together, but come on!

About this car, though – I think it looks nice, I’d even consider buying it after a few years after learning about possible reliability issues.

One other thing – as much as China purports itself to be communist – it ain’t. And hate the Chinese government, if anyone, not the Chinese people; they’ve done nothing wrong.

That’s not a bad design. If they can match BMW’s quality, or at least come close, and sell it for way less, it’d be a winner.

another unbelievably misinformed comment.

as aerospace and automobile manufacture goes, so goes our economy. if we allow china to sell cars here without a fair trade tarriff, then the re-education of our society has become complete and we deserve the decimation that follows.

It’s nice to have a real debate going! :D

I may have been completely wrong – I’m just basing what I’m saying on stuff I’ve read in car rags and autoblogs, which may not be the best source for this kind of economic information.

I can see what you’re saying about the tariffs, Jim, I mean look at Great Britain’s transformation into an economic superpower following the industrial revolution. They allowed their home grown industrial complex to flourish by heavily tariffing imports in many areas. They then relaxed the tariffs and went on a free trade crusade because they had managed to be able to produce more goods more cheaply than their competitors. I can definitely see how this is analogous to the situation with China and the US. On the other hand, you can’t honestly say that the car industry isn’t suffering tremendously from the poor quality of the majority of its products. I’m sure there are other issues; maybe the quality issue is merely ancillary in importance to some, but still.

About the Chinese, though – were the Russian people responsible for Stalin’s atrocities? – same kind of thing. Or, for that matter, were the European powers, who created a great demand for slaves, responsible for slavery in the latter half of the 20th century? Or were the Africans, some of which states…

You know what? I’m just gonna end it like this:

People, by and large, are physically and mentally the same. All Chinese are not crazy free-press-hating wanna-be-despots. The idea that they are is where bigotry and racism start. Don’t forget that WE interned thousands of Asians during World War II, helped install pro-america despots in many South American, African and Middle-Eastern countries… I’m not going to get into more contemporary stuff, cuz that’s just flame bait.

I was just talking about this to someone earlier. McCarthyism is still going strong, so long after the government gave up on it.

McCarthy would be grinning from ear to ear, hearing everyone yell “the communists are coming!” Cheap labour in foreign countries is here to stay. Sucks for anyone with an American manufacturing job, but it’s a fact of life. It seems far fetched now, but things like this are the first step toward a truely global economy, and who knows, maybe in 50 years, there will be very little difference in the US and China. Seems like it could be more than possible.

GM’s largest profits come from sales in China.
We do it to them, they do it to us, the world goes round and round. One day Ethiopia gets its own car company, and we’ll complain why those diseased Africans are allowed to manufacture and export cars. Inferior countries should know to stay in their place and only buy from world super powers, never sell back.

#24 – if you had actually read the post, you would know that the car was designed by Pininfarina, an Italian coachbuilder. As far as pollution – they have a growing economy and the cheapest source of energy available to them is soft coal, which pollutes much more than the other kind (not sure about the names of either).

This is purely speculation – they disdain smog control because regulating it would dampen the growth of their economy. The United States, for the same reason, walked away from the Kyoto council dealy.

This car is definitely a look alike fo the current 5-series but only looks better (except the C-pillar). Chris Bangle, you should see this piece of design. How about use it as the facelift for the 5-series next year? :)

The concern over things ‘made in China’ is just a repeat from the same shout during the 80’s when everything is ‘made in Japan’. You don’t worry about the Japanese anymore? Or because they are building Toyotas, Honda, Nissans here in the same soil? Why the Detriot brands only sells in the States? Why Toyotas, Honda, BMWs, M-Bs are selling in the world, not just one state or continent? You should know the answer my friend.

K… how does this qualify as a “Chinese” car?

I recently saw a road test by the ADAC (Germany) of the “1st chinese suv”: they crashed that sht at 45km/h and the test dummy inside was almost decapitated by the steering wheel & steering column!

‘fourse it cost less than $10,000 — so what? event a minor fender-bender might be deadly in one of these things!

the report didn’t mention the Brilliance is the BMW partner and produce 3&5 series in China. They share the same factory and the same line.

BTW,the pirce would be $10000 at least~believe? 320mt sells $50000 here ! -_-!! 530?$70000!

so don’t hope it will beat bmw(bmw won’t agree),it just a “low end” product(comparing with bmw),but has a more suitable balance between performance and price~
