I recently saw a road test by the ADAC (Germany) of the “1st chinese suv”: they crashed that sht at 45km/h and the test dummy inside was almost decapitated by the steering wheel & steering column!

‘fourse it cost less than $10,000 — so what? event a minor fender-bender might be deadly in one of these things!

The concern over things ‘made in China’ is just a repeat from the same shout during the 80’s when everything is ‘made in Japan’. You don’t worry about the Japanese anymore? Or because they are building Toyotas, Honda, Nissans here in the same soil? Why the Detriot brands only sells in the States? Why Toyotas, Honda, BMWs, M-Bs are selling in the world, not just one state or continent? You should know the answer my friend.

This is purely speculation – they disdain smog control because regulating it would dampen the growth of their economy. The United States, for the same reason, walked away from the Kyoto council dealy.

McCarthy would be grinning from ear to ear, hearing everyone yell “the communists are coming!” Cheap labour in foreign countries is here to stay. Sucks for anyone with an American manufacturing job, but it’s a fact of life. It seems far fetched now, but things like this are the first step toward a truely global economy, and who knows, maybe in 50 years, there will be very little difference in the US and China. Seems like it could be more than possible.

I may have been completely wrong – I’m just basing what I’m saying on stuff I’ve read in car rags and autoblogs, which may not be the best source for this kind of economic information.

I can see what you’re saying about the tariffs, Jim, I mean look at Great Britain’s transformation into an economic superpower following the industrial revolution. They allowed their home grown industrial complex to flourish by heavily tariffing imports in many areas. They then relaxed the tariffs and went on a free trade crusade because they had managed to be able to produce more goods more cheaply than their competitors. I can definitely see how this is analogous to the situation with China and the US. On the other hand, you can’t honestly say that the car industry isn’t suffering tremendously from the poor quality of the majority of its products. I’m sure there are other issues; maybe the quality issue is merely ancillary in importance to some, but still.

About the Chinese, though – were the Russian people responsible for Stalin’s atrocities? – same kind of thing. Or, for that matter, were the European powers, who created a great demand for slaves, responsible for slavery in the latter half of the 20th century? Or were the Africans, some of which states…

People, by and large, are physically and mentally the same. All Chinese are not crazy free-press-hating wanna-be-despots. The idea that they are is where bigotry and racism start. Don’t forget that WE interned thousands of Asians during World War II, helped install pro-america despots in many South American, African and Middle-Eastern countries… I’m not going to get into more contemporary stuff, cuz that’s just flame bait.

The reason the “indigenous manufacturing base” is collapsing, at least as far as cars (and American-grown cars at that as a number of other countries are creating car factories in the states) is because the cars they build, on the whole, suck.

as aerospace and automobile manufacture goes, so goes our economy. if we allow china to sell cars here without a fair trade tarriff, then the re-education of our society has become complete and we deserve the decimation that follows.

About this car, though – I think it looks nice, I’d even consider buying it after a few years after learning about possible reliability issues.

One other thing – as much as China purports itself to be communist – it ain’t. And hate the Chinese government, if anyone, not the Chinese people; they’ve done nothing wrong.

Thats always the argument from people who don’t have the brain power to formulate a legitimate argument. ie. immigration – we must be racist to want secure borders.

get real, folks. the last 10 years of not paying attention to where the stuff you buy comes from is OVER.

and that includes cars. if you believe “free” trade is a good thing, i hope you’re independently wealthy and not concerned about the complete destruction of our indigenous manufacturing base.

for the rest of us, cars like this are the beginning of the ultimate battle of the US versus china. period.
