Illustrations: Mercedes/McLaren SLS in the works?

Mercedes and McLaren are planning to sell as many as 2000 “SLS” sports cars a year to rival the likes of the Ferrari F430, Lamborghini Gallardo and the V10 version of Audi’s R8, according to the insiders at Brenda Priddy & Company. Although McLaren engineers are remaining tight-lipped about the project, sources say feasibility studies are currently being carried out on the car at one of Mercedes’ secret test centers in Germany.

McLaren is hoping to use carbon fiber construction for the new car, although there are doubts about the economic viability of using the material for a car with a projected price tag of about 150,000 Euros.

Sources wouldn’t be budged on whether the new car, thought to be code-named P8, will have a three-seat arrangement similar to that of the F1, but equally our source doggedly refused to confirm the new car as a conventional two-seater. One possibility is that the third seat would be mounted centrally towards the rear, the reverse of the F1’s layout. It will be mid-engined though, partly to make it distinct from the front-engined Mercedes SLR McLaren. Gallery after the jump…

Looks great…but why bother entering into an already overpopulated market segment? They should make it ever so slightly expensive…say 100-150k, and build it like it should be built, with no compromises. That’s what made Mercedes great, not building to a price point.

Too much of a curved half-moon for me. Produced as is, I would not buy this. The SLR McLaren is a good looking car, so why are they trying to make this one look like a Honda Accord aka “The Bubble”?

Why do they like these lines? This has the same effect on me as did the Mazda Nagare: it’s like one big wing or fender. It’s as if the designers want to have you drive a car that looks like a single lump on wheels.

Nope, I do not like this exterior design.

It’s like a 13-year old designed it. These illustrations are just pointless. Anyone could throw a picture up there of what they think it could look like. This is a perfect example of this.

Ugly as sin. The frame probably looks better than this horrible illustration.

hockeygod1331, you’re absolutely right. I might not be on this website at all if I were filthy rich but I sure do know what I like in design no matter how much it costs and this sure isn’t it. Sorry.

I’m also fond of manually shifted transmissions, which is something the SLR didn’t have, so why would this new car have one? Would making me filthy rich change my likes, dislikes and sense of taste? No. For that money I’d rather have a Ferrari 599GTB because it appeals to what I like.

Why is it that if someone on this site expresses an opinion about a car’s exterior design and that car just so happens to cost a fortune it’s automatically assumed that person’s opinion has no validity whatsoever?

This will be a fantasticly fast luxury car. No, I cannot afford one. If I could I still wouldn’t put down a huge deposit on one. Why? I don’t like how it looks and I prefer a manual transmission in a sportscar or grand touring coupe.

“Hyperion, I’m pretty sure if you actually had the money to buy this you wouldn’t be spending time posting on this web-site.”

I can get an Enzo each year off my bank acct’s interest alone but I’m still here. The fact of the matter is, it doesn’t matter how much $ you have, if you’re someone who cares about cars in general either as a hobby or as in my case for business, this is a good site to check. I do have a problem when someone claim a Lambo is technically superior to a Ferrari as if they’ve test driven both since that scenario is very unlikely.

I like it. The old SLR was ugly to me. This car cleans up the extra long front end of the SLR. The notches and angles were wierd at first but look better every time I see it. I love the lights. Something seems wrong about the rear view mirrors and finally I do not believe that that exhaust will be 50 state legal.
What is the purpose of putting the exhaust so high?

A bit overdone with the styling and German quality and reliability is no where near as good as say, GM. So we have another Corvette wannabe, with 5% of the
engineering talent and 95% of a 3rd grade drawing.

Another flop from Mercedes if they even bother with it. Money would be better spent improving reliability and build quality. I’m sure the millions spent designing this could have been put to better use, like building a car as agood as a Buick or Cadillac.

Ive driven yugos that had better build quality than a buick. My daughters barbie big wheel has better fit and finish than an 06 CTS. Oh what luxury that crap box offers what with the painted black blastic buttons, that with only say 8560 miles start to scrape off. That is American Luxury at its best!

Well i think its a sick looking car, and for people who can afford it… I dont know about you, but if im going to spend over 100k for a car, its going to be comfortable and fast, so dont diss mercedes benz for making this car the best of both worlds. Most of you sound like you want it to be sctrictly a race car based, no interior, difficult to use racing clutch, just a spedometor, basicaly a Mclaren F1, but the problem with that car was besides the high speed, it was an incredibly hard to drive and twitchy car, one false move would get you into a spinning fire ball of death.

So big whoop mercedes comes along and is trying to make someone good even better.
