Dodge Demon Concept [Update]

The Dodge Demon first showed its aggressive and stylish lines with Cerberus in control of Chrysler, and the company planning a complete turnaround of the under-performing brand. While the transformation was to include extensive cost cutting and heavier scrutiny for upcoming models, such as the scrapping of the Imperial sedan, there was then hope for new and exciting models to enter production. The Dodge Demon is intended to deliver cutting-edge style, performance and value for those looking for Boxster-like looks and performance at a fraction of the cost.

Chrysler first exhibited the Dodge roadster concept, called the Demon, at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2008. The vehicle was originally designed to compete with the popular Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky, as well as the Mazda MX-5. Now, with both Pontiac and Saturn out of the picture, the Demon is poised to compete with an even shorter list of competitors should it re-enter the production picture.

Power comes from a 172 horsepower 2.4 liter engine, offering peak torque of 165 pound-feet. A six-speed manual sends power to the rear wheels in the concept version, but Leftlane reported that the production version would likely come as a front-wheel drive car. Weight is estimated at 2,600 pounds. Dodge officials say an SRT version could also be offered with a 300 horsepower four-cylinder from the Dodge Caliber SRT-4.

The Dodge Demon has for now fallen victim to a continuously struggling Chrysler and changes in ownership. Cerebus' attempted resurrection of the Chrysler brand failed, and after a multi-billion dollar government bailout Chrysler was left part-owned by the United Auto Workers union, part-owned by the U.S. Government and part-owned by Fiat. This changing of hands and constant interruptions of product development and funding has landed the Demon concept car in obscurity - with no details coming out of Chrysler about the future of this highly anticipated concept car.

In a 2008 interview with Wards Auto, Chrysler's Design Chief Trevor Creed said that the Demon is at the top of his agenda and that conditions are ideal for the car to get a green light. Chrysler has yet to release official plans to make the Demon, but it sounds as the car is on the right track to make production.

"While the iconic Dodge Viper is a dream car for many, the Dodge Demon is designed to be an attainable dream car," said Jae Chung - Dodge Demon Principal Exterior Designer, Chrysler Group. "The exterior design is simple yet bold, featuring an energetic combination of curves and intersecting planes."
