$35,000 should be upper range that they want (I hope).
The price adjustment from the original Challenger being $19,000? I’m skeptical. Inflation makes it 6 times more than the price in the early 70′s.

Cost?? Who cares!! As a DC employees son in law, I’ll be shaving about 6-8 grand off the sticker. And if your dealer was worth a shit, he’d find a way to do that for you. My 06 Ram Quad cab stickered for $32,180. I put $1000 down, got out of my trade, and walked out owing about $24,000. Goody for me.

What I’m merely pointing out is that there are factors beyond auto manufacturers control that make bringing Camaros and Challengers back to market very difficult, and in a Wal-mart mentality world its all about price. The young 1st time new car buyer American manufacturers desperately need to attract to survive (particularly GM) will, for the most part never be able to buy a car like this today because the cost would be well beyond a entry level price due to the thinks Skunk pointed out. My example with the 1969 R/T was to illustrate that working stiffs and young people of the time had their choice of Challengers, Chevelles, Buick Wildcats, and many more musclecars to pick from that they could afford. If 1960′s folk dared dream of buying the very best, top of the line Charger R/T money could buy, it would only be the equivalent of about $19,200 today. That wouldn’t even get you a Civic SI today, and the SI is just a cheap subcompact FWD 4 cylinder econobox. So, like it or not, these modern muscle cars have no choice but to be higher priced niche products in todays world. My point, Greenspeed, is that companys in such fiscal peril as GM cannot simply snap their fingers and rush a Camaro to market because some people think it looks pretty. The 2006 market reality is there is a disconnect between what young buyers can afford and the costs to produce a car that wouldn’t be a cheap imposter, which is why modern musclecars must be upmarket products. If you want a realistic feel for the price of a modern R/T, look the Chrysler 300 SRT8 which is $42,695. So take a big swig of reality and show up with your college degree if you want a non-base model modern muscle car. And rember, you heard “klanwägen” here first, why do you think they are all orange?

Skunk is right. The prices of all cars have increased above inflation. Today we get a lot more in a car (some because of regulation/ some because of competition for features) than we did in the 1960′s. We can do the CPI caluclation for any car from the 1960s and we’d get the same result. If we went by madcapp’s “logic”, all cars would sell less than they did in the 1960s. This isn’t true for an econobox or a family sedan, so it most likely won’t be true for a muscle car either.

Its gonna be builtI hear the first ones wil hit about jan -march 2007.

My dealer locally has my name and a deposit already of 2k.Fully refundable of coarse.
He aisd DC expects to have more info on ordering the challenger by this july.
He suggested that I be ready about that time.I cant wait..
I have own several Challeners and chargers and this thing event if it wont be a ford gt500 killer wont be priced at 60 k either.
I just want to have one to drive not to race every rice turd out there.They arnt worth the rubber on my tires and why give a free show on my dime.
I feel the same way when ever I get some ricer pulling up to me in my C5.
They dont rate a smoke show or any skin off my tires unless they want to meet me at the track…
Then they get a big lesson on qaulity and not bolt on tech.

Id pay up to 40 k for the car but no more..

madcapp, good points. however, i don’t care about base retail pricing – it SHOULD be in the 25-35 range with a top-of-the-line mill.

what concerns me is the “limited availability” thing – that’s just a bone for the dealer network to F us – thus driving the prices well beyond what the car should reasonably cost. if it’s $30K from DC, i’ll pay it. but i do NOT want to pay a 5-10K premium to some prick dealer. HELL no.

Understand though, that automotive technology has improved greatly over the years. If the new Challenger was going to be just like the old one, a hemi engine thrown into a metal chassis with some pedals and guages and stuff, $19,000 would be reasonable. But modern cars are required to have things like ABS, airbag systems, cats, multiple-speaker stereos, nav system, climate control, crumple zones, TCS,etc. Not to mention use of higher quality materials like aluminum and such.

I’m shocked, shocked to find there’s gambling going on here. I price adjusted a 69 Charger R/T last week using the CPI inflation calculator and found that it would be in the $19K range. That’s for the top spec 69 car, base models would be more like $14K. This is exactly why we in the Superpower cannot expect a muscle car revival, there’s no cheap RWD platforms in auto manufacturers portfolios to transform into muscle cars. Any high-spec V8 muscle coupe is gonna be closer to 30K with top spec…think Saleen, Z/28, R/T type stuff being north of $35K. The cost structure has significantly changed because manufacturers are geared to FWD, and there is NO way to bring these type of cars to market and have them be affordable cars as the originals were. It would be nice, but its not realistic to think you are gonna get something like this for $25K, especially with a confederate flag on top.

wow, this is a huge mistake for DC if they do this.

reasons:

1. this has the potential to kick the mustang’s ass. mustang is one of the few bright spots for an otherwise anemic and hurting Ford. this is DC’s chance to kick them in the nuts. if they go Prowler/Viper on us with the Challenger, you can forget about that.

2. this is a “people’s car” (ugh, not in a VW way, but you get what i mean). this is a car that lots of people should want and own – not something the asshole dealer network gets to F us in the A over. sadly, that looks like the direction DC is heading – appeasing ahole dealers at the expense of the customer base.

3. challenger always was an “affordable” muscle car – lower price point than the Charger, for example. why on earth would you want to catapult it over the current (blecch) “charger” and put it into the 40K and up stratosphere?

if the challenger ends up being a car only ahole investment banker pricks drive, i will be FURIOUS.

That’s trying to split hairs. Its quite obviously this car is spiritual evolution and modern day interpretation of Bo and Luke’s Klanwägen (I crack myself up constantly). I couldn’t tell you the number of rednecks I’ve run into that think a Camaro, Firebird, or Z/28 are totally different cars and want to fight you on the matter, instead of just accepting the fact that its all the same F-body with different badges.
