2008 Chevrolet Equinox Sport

12/14/2006, 9:35 AM

By admin

GM has announced the new 2008 Chevrolet Equinox Sport, a performance-oriented variant of the compact SUV. It features lowered suspension, 18-inch wheels, a 263-horsepower DOHC engine, a six-speed automatic with manual mode, a tuned exhaust, and unique exterior appointments. Details such as body color fascias and the elimination of the roof rack contribute to the sporty appearance.

“The Equinox Sport embodies all of the value-driven performance ingredients that have made Chevrolet the brand for performance enthusiasts of all walks of life,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. “Better still, customers don’t have to sacrifice the versatility they expect from the Equinox – they simply get an SUV that hauls their friends and cargo with head-turning style.”

The 3.6 liter engine provides a 42-percent power increase over the Equinox LT, and a zero to sixty time of under seven seconds. The 2008 Equinox Sport is scheduled to arrive at Chevrolet dealerships in the third quarter of 2007. Front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models are available. Gallery after the jump…

This is the poor man’s Trailblazer SS. (The Trailblazer, which it shouldnt have been made in first place with the WORST and TACKIEST interior in the world!!)

They should darken the headlights and taillights. I know they offer the darkened taillights as an option now, which I think looks pretty cool. Oh and S-60, this isn’t an SS…for now, it’s just a ‘Sport’ package (single ‘S’). They’d need to cram in more than just a 3.6 to call it an SS, although 0-60 in under 7 isn’t bad.

Not bad. I like the exhausts. I used to hate the “altezza” style lights, but they’ve grown on me. Done right, they just look more defined, instead of the usual red/yellow/white blob of yesteryear.

Hey at least they knew it didnt deserve an SS badge. It ought to have a 300 horse V8, a lowered stance, trailblazer-SS style suspension setup, smoked out non-altezza taillights, dual exhausts, 19″ wheels, and the front fascia off this one with those new trademark SS silver-scoops.

Its a step in the right directions, and gives the model a little more oomph before they redesign it. Special editions and things like this usually come toward a models end to help boost sales.

Did I miss a memo or something? Since when have chrome wheels been out? Granted, some cars just shouldn’t wear chrome rims, but given the right balance of style, they can make a car look sharp. BTW, this seems kind of excessive for just a ‘Special Edition’ package before a redesign…I doubt they would throw this package together and redesign the darn thing for the next model year. But I could be wrong.

So what’s the point? So you’de buy a rollerskate if it had polished rims and sport exhaust? The american consumer needs to step up and tell the automakers that we want quality products. Not just recycled garbage that they give a “sport” badge. If you tuner kids want that crap, be my guest, because that’s all you’re gonna get. Keep buying their meat-stangs and sport-utility-god-knows-whats. We (not me) get stiff over the stupit **** so that’s all they’ll ever give. Example: Mustang Wagon? Point made.

A welcome improvement to the Equinox. The first one was merely “OK”, but with the redone radio, 3.6, and 6 speed this could actually be a very viable option if the price is right. GM is finally starting to get things right.

YourNameHere. I think you are a little mistaken. While I won’t disgree that making SUV’s isn’t the greatest idea in the longrun, they are being made because companies are banking on the high profitability before gas goes up. You really think foreign companies are completely done making big SUV’s?

Newly Redesigned Cayenne (with, guess what? MORE POWER)
New Audi Q7
New BIGGER Cr-v
New BIGGER Rav4
New Mercedes Rclass
New Redesigned Mclass
New Redesigned Gclass
New FJ Cruiser

….shall I go on? Almost all of these SUV’s are either bigger/heavier or have more power. The point is companies are doing it to make that extra bit of cash. By saying that GM is stupid for doing so is retarded on your part. You should be looking at the industry in itself.

I drive reasonably. i ride my bike when i can. i have no body kits, rims, or stupid exhaust tips. i’m going to school to be an automotive designer to be part of the solution. what are you doing besides supporting the problem? i’m not on a horse. we have a global problem. do you disagree? are we running out of oil? is there REALLY a need for SUVs and trucks? support the problem and they’ll keep providing it.

Leozug, at no point did I ever say that it was a good idea to make them. Nor did I say they should be around or even defended how good the equinox is. If you reread my comment, you’ll see that I did say that the problem is industry wide. However, I completely agree that american companies are pouring wayyyyy too much into SUVs. I wasn’t giving an excuse as to why they should make them, I was merely giving an explanation as to why they are doing it. Btw, ford isn’t losing billions each year purely because of their drop in SUV sales. They have been a hurting puppy for over ten years. It wasn’t until recently that SUV sales went down. Their losses are mainly due to their healthcare costs and labor costs.

It’s great to have dreams and be passionate about them. But not everything in life is one way or the other, there are always compromises.
You wish to become an auto designer and be part of the solution. But what if the company that employs you tells you to design a truck. Are you gonna quit?

And ‘is there really a need for suv or truck’- yes, I need a truck for my business- an Echo, a Fit, a Sentra won’t do.

By the way, the Chevy’s instrument panel is very good looking.

This isnt even a gas guzzling SUV so why are people complaining? This will probably get 25mpg on the highway which is comparable to other SUVS of this size. Why would anyone with a thread of common sense be bashing this SUV as harmful to the environment? what about the RDX, CX-7, Edge, etc.? They are in the same size range and get similar mileage and yet they aren’t made by GM.

“Gm isn’t stupid for making money. their stupid for putting all of their eggs in one basket and not preparing for the future. that’s why they are always behind the ball. that’s why they are allways falling. go ahead argue. you know it’s true.”

Anyone making a statement like that is clueless. Try catching up on GM’s product plans. Arent their any knowledgable environmentalists out there? It would be nice if you were on top of the subject at hand before making silly posts. GM is being more aggressive about hybrids than anyone other than Toyota. They have four models coming out next year alone and more in 2008. Get a clue.

Why, oh, WHY is leozug even on here? He hates gas-guzzling cars and trucks and praises his eco-friendly Sentra. C’mon, this place is for auto enthusiasts, not tree-huggers. Leozug pines for a hybrid or an electric. Woo hoo. Where does electricity come from? Coal-burning power plants!

I don’t think being an auto designer is gonna be a part of any solution anyway. I think if leozug wants to solve our oil addiction problem, he should be an engineer of some sort. We already can make aerodynamic cars. We need new technology to increase fuel economy or develop alternate fuels. That is a separate field from “automotive design.”

The Equinox is a miserable ride. I got one as a rental when my SRX was in for a computer module replacment (And my first brake job at 10k miles…). It had 150 miles on it and the pile of crap wobbled and clopped down the road like a mid Eighties Ford Bronco. The check engine light was on for the 2 days that I had it.

Couldn’t wait to give it back to Avis/Hertz or whomever that pile of crap came from but I was soo happy to get back into my Caddy.

leozug, I didn’t comment because I wasn’t online. For the record I drive a Thunderbird SC. It has a 3.8L Supercharged V6 and with my heavy foot gets about 250 miles on an 18 gallon tank. I drive it because I love the sound the engine makes and it puts a smile on my face. I’m a systems administrator and use it to support my addiction to cars :) .

Heres a quote I found from typing in “Europe SUV sales”:

“The attacks come as SUV sales are rising in Europe. According to the Association des Constructeurs Européens d’Automobiles, Europe’s leading car and truck trade association, the share of SUV registrations in European Union countries has more than doubled, from 3.2 percent in 1998 to 6.5 percent at the end of last year.”

You also state that cars average 21 mpg today when the model T averaged 25 mpg. Would you also like to compare the fire power of a P-51 to that of an F-16? The model T didn’t have side curtain airbags, it didn’t have anti-lock brakes, traction control, leather seats, CD players, A/C, power windows, power locks, stability control, duel zone climate control, seating for 7, not to mention any of the complex computer systems that cars have today. I’m also willing to bet my entire years salary that in a crash with say….a Kia Rio its passengers would fare worse at 35mph.

Regardless I’m done with this conversation. Neither you nor I are going to change the minds of each other, so lets agree to disagree and leave it at that.

What frustrates me, GM could have divirted this R&D money into makeing the Aveo or Cobalt better. Everyone who watches the auto market see the the Big 2.5 say “yea yea we know things are going bad, we will work on it” then they turn out this BS.

YourNameHere, why not lump those high-priced foreign SUVs into the group? (I noticed you didn’t mention the American Escalade -the #1 luxury SUV seller). The point isn’t whether new SUV buyers will be able to afford their gas or not (”if someone can afford a 50k, 60k, 70k, 100k SUV they they dont look at the MPG sticker”). Also, consider the decline in minivan sales which is why many companies have diverted energy to fortify their closest offering. And, because YOU would like to see R&D diverted from one vehicle to another is not a case for doing so.
