The real problem is the rear has absolutely 0 VW design cues. More like old school Saab cues, which aren’t great cues to have.

They definitely had to do something drastically different to distinguish this from the Passat variant. But I wouldn’t have gone this route. That said, I think it will sell ok and the practical side of me would prefer this to the sedan -especially in GLi trim (still practical, right?).

Daphne gets my vote.

Thelma was definitely a from behind kind of girl, perhaps that was an effect of living in a dog-centric environment. To me this car is the opposite of Thelma, as I prefer it from the front.

Nice to see a consensus here, but when a design is this wrong its not surprising. It isn’t attractive (from the rear), it isn’t practical, it looks like it came from another manufacturer (SAAB and perhaps Honda to my eyes) and it has dropped one of the Golf V’s best features (rear lights).

Nice. I currently drive a 325it (wagon) and this looks just as sporty. I got the wagon so I could take my (big) dog around and not have her ruin the back seat with nails and hair. This is one of the better looking wagons I’ve seen, better than the new 3er, but not nearly as expensive. The only reason I got the 325 was because I got a smoking deal through a vendot discount, and my company paid for it. Next purchase is on my own, and this would fit the budget. I had a 2000 Golf before the three, and really enjoyed that car, and like VW/Audi’s as a general rule. This wagon just knocked the A3 out of the ring for me!! Nice job Vdub, just make sure you make a TDi/DSG version for me.

The rest of the VW lineup has high-set taillamps with circular elements.. so why does the rear of this look like the previous-generation Nissan Sentra? The D-pillar and rear side window treatment is similarly bland.. not nearly as sharp and distinctive as the Passat wagon. Supposedly Winterkorn wants VWs to be instantly identifiable from the front.. so what gives here in the rear?

My god that is ugly from the back. I really like the other VW tailights (jetta, passat, golf), but these are horrible. Terrible design job.

I wonder why the Europeans are so afraid to call a station wagon a station wagon. A variant of the Golf would be the GTI, or the R32. But change the body style to a station wagon, and its….well….um….a station wagon.

This is definitely something new compared to the previous squared-off Golf/Jetta wagon. However, the lines just don’t quite meet up in my opinion. It’s not at all recognizable as a Volkswagen – could be a Merc or Saab, as previously stated, or an Arura RL wagon for that matter. Why the droopy line from the tail light arch? And the door cuts in as to intentionally limit the load width. The biggest statement I see VW making with this car is that they do not want it to make any statement at all. Design by committee?

Pretty sharp. Interesting direction VW/Audi is going with the rear glass on the avant type cars. (Compare to the Q7).
