2008 Subaru Impreza to be hatch-only GTI fighter?

04/26/2006, 9:52 AM

By admin

The 2008 Subaru Impreza will target the Volkswagen Golf GTI, according to a report by AutoExpress magazine. The article indicates that a sedan model will no longer be offered, and selection will be limited to three- and five-door hatchbacks. Entry-level models will get a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated boxer engine with 170 horsepower. A more powerful STi turbocharged model will offer 300 horsepower. According to the report, the car will be quite similar to the Subaru B5-TPH Concept, but with a slightly more typical rear end. The glass hatch, however, remains. Even more of a reason for the R36 (300hp) coming instead of a R32. That thing looks awful.

The impreza really is a good car, of course it could use a little work, but thats terrible looking. Part of what made the WRX and STi so good was that they were 4 doors.

I wouldn’t take this too seriously. That is not to say it can’t happen; I just have a feeling this isn’t much more than editorial conjecture coming from Subaru’s recent back cover ad in SubieSport, which directly mocks Volkswagen’s FAST campaign.

More than anything, the ad targets VW’s definition of the word “Fast,” not the GTI itself. Moreover, you could easily read the Subie ad as a response to the “Unpimp zee Auto” ads that mock large spoilers and hoodscoops.

Earth to Subaru-lovers. The current Subaru line-up looks home-grown. Something needs to be done. To call anything Subaru does ugly when you see what they currently have on the road is wicked funny.

Will Subaru give up this imbecilic three-piece grill already? And if it’s meant to create a “brand image,” it will do nothing other than to make future buyers think “ugly” everytime they hear the name Subaru.

I really hope Subaru doesn’t produce this ugly ass car…

It’s funny how automakers will get lots of bad criticism for a concept car/ prototype, and they’ll still make it… On the other hand it pisses me off when they put out an amazing concept/prototype and they refuse to make it…

So yeah, please to not make this car Subaru…
