2008 VW Scirocco: More hatch, less coupe?

05/09/2006, 10:48 AM

By admin

We haven’t heard too much about the 2008 Volkswagen Scirocco lately, but Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport has just published a new artist’s rendering of the yet-to-be-announced car. While AutoCar, AutoBild and others have forecasted a Scirocco with a low, sloping roof and coupe-like profile, AMS is calling for something quite different. The image shows a vehicle with a hatch-like shape, similar to the original Scirocco and Corrado models. We’re not sure who to believe, but time will tell. So far, VW has only committed to a “2+2 sport coupe that hearkens to the heyday of the Scirocco.”

it does look good, but I think a coupe would definately bring more diversity to their line up… They should keep this one RWD or AWD…

It looks an awful lot like the Audi A1 image that Automobile Magazine has in the June issue. Kinda makes sense (VW Scirocco = Audi A1) given the Golf/GTI/A3 relationship.

LOL..keep dreaming. Most likely FWD or – best case scenario – front-biased AWD.

The VW Scrirocco will be built in Portugal, alongside the Eos, and exported to all world markets.

The factory, called Autoeuropa, also builds the VW Sharan, Seat Alhambra and Ford Galaxy. However, the latter is no longer produced because Ford broke up the VW-Ford contract to build these people-carriers side by side to save costs.

Has VW ever built a front engine rear wheel drive car? Haven’t they all been Front engine front wheel drive? Except the old bugs & stuff. Don’t expect the new scirocco to be RWD. It would be nice though.

VW is really coming on these days. I like a car mfg that doesn’t abandon its roots. I would love to find a cherry 86-87 16 valver. Also VW needs more dealers and a tad bit better pricing. Mazda and Toyota are definately not sitting still….. That 07 six cylinder Camry XLE with the 6 speed automatic in my opinion is a pretty serious ride for 27K. Also VW needs to tool up faster and quit treating the USA like we really don’t matter. Look how long we had to wait for the new GTI. Now the Scirocco will take forever and probably come in with a somewhat anemic mill…. lets hope not.
