The year isn’t quite over yet, but it’s close enough to ring the final bell on the winners and loser of 2008. This year was tumultuous, to say the least, with the industry first struggling through record high gas prices and then a complete collapse of the new car market. But despite the ups and down, auto sales seemed to have leveled out on the whole, with only a few surprises on either list.
We’ll start with the winners. Despite $4 gas, the Ford F-150 retained its top spot on the list – where it has been for the last 27 years — selling almost 474,000 units through the first 11 months of the year. The F-150 was followed by Chevrolet’s full-size pickup, the Silverado, which managed to find a home with 431,000 buyers through November, according to Forbes.
The next three sports were filled by vehicles that reflected that $4 a gallon gas period, the Toyota Camry and the Honda Civic and Accord, respectively.
Not surprisingly, the fuel-efficient Toyota Corolla/Matrix took the number six spot with 328,000 sales, followed by Nissan’s Altima with just over 250,000 sales. The Chevy Impala, Dodge Ram and Ford Focus rounded out the top 10.
This year’s biggest loser was the Hyundai Entourage, which found only 5,400 buyers – a 67 percent drop from the same period last year. The relatively unknown Mitsubishi Endeavor wound up in only 5,700 driveways, while the fuel-chugging Hummer H2 managed to find 5,721 buyers.
Chrysler’s lame duck Pacifica took home the title of the 4th worst-selling car of 2008 – with 6,200 sales – followed by the Nissan Armada, Hummer H3 and Dodge Durango. The GMC Envoy, Jeep Commander and Toyota FJ Cruiser rounded out the best of the worst for 2008.

The Chrysler Pacifica being on that list is misleading – is it not? The Pacifica [From what I can gather from an internet search] ended production soon after the 2008 models were introduced. [Sometime near the end of November of 2007] Correct me if I’m wrong. Craig!!

GMC Sierra? where did that come in, I’m sure that combined with silverado it beat out the F-150. All awesome vehicles. If 6k people bought a hummer then there must still be a hugh surplus of those sitting on lots. I will take one for free if they are giving them away!

This is going to sound corny as hell, but I’d like to include LLN as one of the big winners from 2008. For any site to survive such a painful format change and come back with such a vengeance I dare say any Big 3 renaissance is going to pale by comparison.
Now where do I meet up with Elias to do some laps in an ACR Viper?

Its Funny Hmm I have to comment on this. The Quality of the Honda Civic and Accord has always been the Gold Standard and in many ways it still is. Camry Ditto. This is why people the Japanese keep winning. Their Products do all the talking not the DS who follow their brand name AKA Chevy lol. Its laughable. Ford has actually come out on top in quality which I find hard to believe but its true.
But the Honda Civic and Toyota Camry are my cars baby!

Oh yeah I can see why GM is trying to unload Hummer. I would too if and when gas prices go back up. The funny thing though is it was a Military vehicle never intended for civillian use. Its is doubly funny that because a famous american-Austrian Actor buys one – it then became the IT Vehicle to get.
But why its like owning a Greyhound BUS?? It needs a Fillup station every 100 Miles it goes!

and, AutoObsessed, the RL isnt on the list because their sales figures didnt change significantly. The entourage saw the biggest drop off in sales, while the RL stayed more consistent, which is why the entourage is the biggest loser. If the RL saw a 70% drop in sales, then it would be in that spot.

Dr. Fill -
Your fleet numbers are old (Oct 2007 – March 2008). The Corolla is actually higher by this point (probably ~15%). May through September had relatively high fleet sales. The F-series is also higher than 29% at this point. It has been nearly 40% since May as retail buyers moved to cars. But… most of those fleet are good sales to companies who use them for work.
The Fusion and Focus are significantly lower at this point. The Fusion has had around 10% fleet sales in Q3 and Q4 while the Focus has been just over 10%. For the year, the Focus will likely end up 10%.
GM’s numbers are a bit low-skewed as well as July, August and September were all massive fleet months for GM.

I am not one sided on this but I have driven all of the trucks out there and to me the Dodge is much much nicer. In fact i drove a F-150 for about 2 weeks (DEMO) and couldn’t wait to get back into a dodge. I am driving a 08 RAM (demo) now and currently own a 04 1500 HEMI that I use to tow my Camper. I am about 1500 lbs over weight and it pulls just fine. What do you think the dodge truck is lacking over the Ford and Chevy? It has more power, more style (my opinion), and is more inexpensive just my $.02.

I think these numbers at the bottom end need some sort of qualifier. I’m sure the Pacifica outsold the Gallardo.
DrFill: I don’t know why GM insists on calling that V6/FWD thing an Impala.
Focus is underrated.
Bankruptcy2009: Chevy/GMC are marginally better, plus spread over two lines. Ford SHOULD outsell.
Bankruptcy2009: “The Quality of the Honda Civic …” is such that it was the worst car I’ve ever owned. The 2008 accord/tl may be the Gold Standard, but the Malibu/Aura is the Platinum Standard. I do admit, however that those terms overestimate the difference between the cars.
Camry/es is less than crap.

Hey Fill doesn’t matter F150 smoked your beloved Tundra, pull fleet out and it still smoked it, a four year old platform. Whats wrong with fleet anyways? There is a distinct difference between fleet sales and rental fleet, and while your little precentages are impressive it does not tell the whole story, Toyota actually supplies more vehicles to renatl fleets than Ford.

JackJimChokinghisTurkey you sir obviously don’t know what your talking about or were in a Coma for the last Um 30 years. Since the Accords beginning it was a high quality car, and it makes no apologies for doing so. I concur with what tripleonefive has said Honda and Toyota have set the standard for the world to follow in terms of the Best Quality, Reliability, ReSale Value, and Economy. And what Chevrolet must do is establish itself as Quailty and Reliable which until now they have’nt been able to. Lets see the proof. And the only way that will happen is If this Mailbu changes that image let us bear witness to the fact its more reliable First before telling us it does. . But it needs some time and evidence its in the same league as a Honda or Toyota sir.
