Ford begins testing 5.0L V8 for use in the 2010 Mustang [Spied]

Spy photographers have spotted a mule for the upcoming 2010 Ford Mustang testing on the roads of Michigan. While the mule looks unassuming thanks to its current-generation Mustang body, the real news is what lies beneath the pony car's hood -- an all-new V8.

The two Mustang mules spotted are actually test beds for the 2010's all-new 5.0L V8. The details giving the new powerplant away are subtle -- the only significant visual cue is the car's exhaust setup -- but our sources confirm that the Blue Oval has indeed begun testing the new engine.

The mules also appear to have the 2010 Mustang's interior, although under heavy camouflage.

While Ford has yet to make an official announcement, it is believed that the 5.0L unit will replace the 4.6L V8 currently used in the Mustang.

The new engine is being developed under the codename 'Coyote' and will kick out 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. Despite the 100 horsepower boost over the current Mustang GT, the new engine will return better fuel mileage than the 4.6L powerplant.

The new 5-liter powerplant will be built at Ford's Essex Engine Plant in Windsor, Ontario.
