2009 Cadillac CTS-V to produce 556 horsepower

06/09/2008, 2:20 PM

By Drew Johnson

The old saying goes ‘Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight’, and it looks like the Cadillac CTS-V will be bringing a whole arsenal to the super sedan battle. Although we already knew that the CTS-V would be packing a version of the Chevrolet Corvette’s supercharged LSA motor, its final performance numbers are quite astonishing.

According to Edmunds, the CTS-V will be taking on the BMW M5 with a 556 horsepower, 551 lb-ft of torque version of GM’s supercharged 6.2L V8. Although those figures are detuned from the ZR1, they will still likely trump the figures of the next-generation M5.

With all that power aboard, Cadillac says the CTS-V can rocket from 0-60 in 3.9 seconds, on its way to a 12 second flat quarter mile — performance numbers normally reserved for supercars.

A CTS-V equipped with an automatic transmission will be able to hit 175 mph, while a six-speed manual car will be able to top out at 191.

It’s nice to see GM still throwing some high performance around despite the looming gas crisis. Let the people who can afford gas get their limited run cars, but keep building econoboxes for those who couldn’t care less about performance. I think having the best of both worlds is going to be the only way to keep their sales up.

I consider myself to be a BMW fan, but this Caddy is awesome. I don’t think it will handle as good as the M5, but with that kind of power, the M5 will need all the help it can get. And, the CTS-V looks amazing!!!

I consider myself pretty lucky to own an E39 M5 AND live in Germany at the same time. What sucks is when you hit 250 Kmph you hit a wall. I can have the car chipped/tunned to exceed 250 (155 mph) but I think I just found my new car.

I love the styling of this new CTS and I think the interior is world class, something the E60 M5 cannot boast of. Can’t wait to get my hands on one of these!

The M5 once ruled. No longer.

I like the M5, but the interior is not as nice as the CTS-V’s, and the engine has a serious torque deficit. It’s also a bit too pricey at $85-90k. We don’t know what the CTS-V pricing will be, but I can guarantee it will be substantially less than the M5.

Horsepower wise the Audi RS6 trumps it with 572 hp.

If you notice, say, in the next 6 to 12 months what seems to be a disproportionate number of used BMWs, Mercs etc on the previously enjoyed parking area of your local Cadillac store then you can call the CTS-V an unqualified success. Until then it’s just a four-door Vette.

556hp and 551lbs torque? 0-60 in 3.9 seconds??? Holy ****! No wonder it set a gring lap record in the production sedan class. I hear this is going to sticker around 56k-59k which is a jump from the 50-51k the last gen CTS-V stickered for. However quite a bargain considering what an M5 would cost.

Well, the timing is impeccable. GM is only 10 years late for a fight in the supercars category. The question to ponder: is a billionaire who buys Ferrari for weekend drive will not buy one and get a Caddy instead? When GM finds such billionaire they should quickly invite him for a test drive.

Have you been paying attention Badass? The CTS-V will be at MOST 60k but most will prob sell between 60-65. The coupe, who knows but I’m gonna guess more since a more limited production and better performance.

PS. If you’re going to try to mock me by asking if I’ve been paying attention……….at least have it make sence.

davebo, I am not Impulsive, I am a serperate person, end of that topic. 400horseSS, I agree this would be a great car to buy, guess I will settle with the Dodge Ram half ton with a diesel (not in the same league really, but I like the torque from a diesel).

@SWM335,
The CTS-V can out-handle an M5, just look at it ring time. And to think it was with a slushbox.

@400horseSS,
You can have an equivalent performance car on the cheap. Buy a G8 GXP and a procharger, you’ll be pushing 600hp. Or procharge your TBSS, that would be a sick truck.

Side note, once the Canyon V8 is out I plan on picking one up a year or two old on the cheap (hopefully a regular cab 4wd) and procharging it. Should make for a fun little rocket truck.

I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for that 5.3L Canyon/Colorado. That was pre-CAFE news, and before oil hit $100/bl. I haven’t heard mention of it in months.

I hope you’re kidding. Gas? It’s gonna drink it like no tomorrow. Lots of gas. Gas is irrelevant with this car. Nobody buys a CTS-V giving a crap about fuel economy. That’s not what this car is about. My guestimate is 14 city / 24 highway. Want better fuel economy? Buy a Prius.

Because you haven’t learned how cars are sold/priced. The CTS-V will prob cost at the dealer 60k, with most of the consumers opting for add-on products/upgrades bringing the price up to 65k or so.
