xyunya is completely on point.. at a time when Americans at the lower end of the economic scale are paying nearly twice as much to fill their fuel tanks than they did just over a year ago, the quintessential American car company raised the price of entry to basic vehicle ownership by OVER 20%!

TomF, there is huge market for chick mini cars today: there are not that many Minis collecting dust on dealer lots and even fewer Fits. The question is who will fill the void or lower end market. Not Chevy.

GM has alot of cars that they don't even build, but buy the rights to put their Chevy badge on it, and then include those cars that they don't even make as part of their sales. Even with all those cars that GM doesn't even make, Toyota still sells more, and Toyota builds all their own cars, Toyota even builds a car for Pontiac.

Hmmm, this, or wait until 09 to get that "40 mpg/turboed/120-140HP" Chevy(which will be shown at a Fall autoshow, according to this, and many other auotmotive sites, the past week, or so).
At least the old Geo Storm looked decent, when it was out(and I even have seen a few still running around!)Yes..Isuzu rebadged..
Maybe they should just settle and get Toyota to give them a small car, like the Yaris, but put the dash./guages in front of the driver, not over the stereo/center stack.
I would buy a Chevy(rebadged Yaris, done right), with 5/100K mile warranty, perhaps.....

There is going to be a huge market for chic-stylish minicars in this country. The Aveo is a good-looking shell (by Giugiaro I think) housing a horrible powerplant. People will jump into cool little cars as gas passes the $5 mark, then jump right out of them again when (A) they get used to $5 or $6 gas, and (B) they realize the minicar isn't saving them that much after all. 34 mpg hwy is pathetic for the Aveo. It's only marginally better than the Malibu, an actual family car.

GM might be making the price increase so they can introduce the Beat or whatever their new small car is going to be at a price under the Aveo, if that small car isn't slated to replace the Aveo. Not sure on that point since we haven't heard much about it.

Z06ified, I am not sure city mileage is better. I rented it once to show good faith to customer (saving on expenses) and end up with about 20 mpg combined in Orange county. Conditions weren't very congested and it was mostly hwy mileage. As I mentioned before: I coulda had a V8.

At least its much cheaper than a Smart, and somewhat less crappy.

I find it funny though that it only manages to get 1 MPG better highway mileage than my modified 450hp '02 Z06. The city mileage is much better tho.

On the subject, Lutz did forget to mention 20+% increase in cost of basic POS from Chevy. Well, it just will help Kia and Hyundai to lick GM now. You gotta be totally demented to pay more for Daewoo with Chevy logo then Hyundai/Kia without. And the bullshit that GM can't make money on small cars will not fly: this is Korean POS. If Kia/Hyundai can sell Rio/Accent for less what is GM problem? Not to mention that 250% more sophisticated Fit cost the same as top of the line (whatever that means for Daewoo) Aveo. When Toyota and Nissan execs read that they must of had party with geisha's and having royal hangover now and stomach pains from laughing.

Don't worry HemiRetard, the day still young. I'll remind you of your deficiencies when others forget. Your bubbly personality of closet homosexual needs to be adjusted now and then. BTW, that Hemi will look nice next to ypour trailer when you'll get in October. The trailer may need paint and extra duct tape to keep window A/C in place, but Hemi will shine.

27/34 out of a car this still is pathetic. Don't worry, I'm not just GM bashing. The Toyota Yaris has pretty pathetic gas mileage for how tiny it is too. A starting price of 12120 isn't bad at all, and when they aren't selling well GM will throw in 500-1000 cash back allowances. Considering the competition (Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, and Toyota Yaris) GM has nothing to worry about with the price.

The Fit really is a neat little car; if they put a turbo in it they could go up against the Mini Cooper, though not in looks. As for the Aveo, sweet christ, stick to what you do best USA -- leave the econoboxes to the people that do it best, the ones that have been living in econobox-dominated countries for the last 20 years (Japan, Korea and Europe).

As much as this article seems to downplay the "slight price increase" of the 2009 Aveo, $2,125 is not an inconsequential amount to raise the cost of the entry point to GM's entire model range, particularly in a time when buyers are turning to smaller, more economical cars. Sounds like the giant is gouging the people it needs most right now.

The problem with the Fit is availability. They're being sold as they come off the delivery truck, and even used ones are selling around MSRP. This is unheard of with car models that are about to get replaced; at this point most dealers would be offering rebates. Honda has stated the 2nd generation car should address the shortfall. Between this problem and the slow release of the next generation hybrid, Honda is losing too many sales.

For the same scratch as top model Aveo you can get Fit. You may feel better about Chevy bow tie on Korean car then about Japanese Honda, but if drop 15K for a car without driving it and trying competition you need your head examined.

It seems that while Lutz was discussing GM's multi-pronged strategic response to rising US gas prices (approving production of the Volt, reducing production of large trucks/SUVs, reviewing the Hunmmer brand, and developing smaller-displacement 4-cylinder motors), he forgot the most important one: raising the base price of GM's lowest-priced 2009 vehicle by $2,125!!

The article neglects to mention the cost of entry for a 2008 Aveo5 was actually $9,995 for the SV edition. Guess GM doesn't want to be selling a full 4-seat vehicle for less than the 2-seater Smart.

Ladies: knowing that as soon as you tell people what new car you've bought there's only one question they'll ever ask about it, make sure you buy a handbag or pair of shoes that's the exact same color as your new Aveo so that way you don't have to drag anyone out to the parking lot.

Supply and Demand people. I'd guess the 10K model was a real stripper which was a slow seller. By dropping it, Chevy/Daewoo can probably make some production changes to reduce costs.
