and so what the vette beats it. it should. its a 2 seater sports car. the mustang is a 5 seater pony car that was never meant to be the best sports car, rather better than the camaro and challenger. the vette also cant haul around your family like a gt500 could. point is that its apples and oranges. two different cars. because if that was the case, the lotus elise (for the same price) should be the best car. since it will tear any car listed here on a track. once again, apples and oranges

Listen guys we can back and forth all day with ours has this and you have that, the big picture is the days of ford vs gm is getting replaced with american vs imports. Face the facts both of the american companies are in trouble and trying to dig out. What we need to be looking at is how to keep our american cars alive and not replaced with imports. If that happens the ford vs gm talks will be nothing more than a thing of the past. As a ford fan I can honestly say I would rather own a american car (any brand) than a import.

I’d still rather buy a car with rear-drive and IRS. That weighs less. After the refresh, I hope they change the rear suspension and make the car a little more compact to save on weight. Resorting to expensive aluminum is way too costly for a Mustang unless it’s a Cobra.

youve gotta be kiddding me. the mustang gets whooped by evos and 335s?!? no it doesnt. maybe on 0-60 they are even. but on the quarter, the gt500 runs low 12s @117mph. way ahead of the evos, 335s, and srt8s. the mustang can keep up with the vette in the corners and beat it in the 1/4 mile. sure the vette is faster, but remember its not a four seat car like the mustang. its a sports car, the mustang is a pony car. its apples and oranges

The thing is, the Mustang has no REASON for being so heavy. It aint THAT big. What are they using for the frame, cast iron?
It weighs more than my S4 which has MORE room, AWD, a V8, and every luxury item under the sun.
A base vette to a base Gt500 is only 3 grand more. And the vette SPANKS it! Dont even get me started on resale values.

Why is Mustang slower off the mark? Weight is one part of the equation (remember, this is based on the larger Jaguar/Lincoln/Thunderbird platform), the other is gearing – they have to have taller gearing for better mileage numbers.

Have you ever driven a Mustang? Those GT’s are relatively big cars & heavy cars – it’s like piloting a ChrisCraft. WRX & EVO are based on smaller/lighter economy cars, BMW’s are smaller and lighter, even Corvette is smaller and lighter. Makes a Big difference…

The answer is the GT500 mustang may have a bunch of HP but it weighs more than an aircraft carrier.. hence the slowness despite the HP.. and yes I think the HP is a bit inflated as well..

Mustang sales rely hugely on the rental market. Problem with that is it devalues resale.
What I don’t understand is why it’s so slow. Even the 500hp version barely does 0-60 in 5 seconds. It gets its ass handed to it by 300hp STI’s, 270hpEvos, and those are AWD!
400hp base Vettes’ crush it. 300hp 335i Bimmers crush it. Even big stuff, like 6.0l hemi Magnums and 300c’s beat it.
What gives? Fake hp #’s? Ineficiency?

The Mustang is a success, that’s why DCX and GM will bring cars to compete in the segment.

Ford must be extra careful when redesigning this car, since its the only that’s actually selling.
If they make a blunder similar to the Explorer/ Expedition and the sales slip, they will be in great trouble.

I like the current looks of the Mustang. But if the Camaro styling is similar to the concept, Ford will need to come up with VERY interesting styling to battle that look.

The Mustang will continue to outsell the new Camaro and the Challenger. It would take several years for Chevy and Dodge to just bury something that’s been on the market as long as the Mustang has. Its unlikely that will happen. Seems to me the Mustang buried the Camaro once already didn’t it.

Mustang sales are definetly healthy right now as they have NO competetion from Dodge (Challenger) and GM (Camaro) As of YET… when these cars come out against the mustang then the compettion will START, right now there isn’t any pony car competetion for the mustang at all..

Who gives a **** about the RS200S it has nothing to do with the Mustang and Camaro competion that may save Fords nearly bankrupt ass.. They can’t sell that obscure B.S. record and make up their deficit with it can they ? so it stands to reason they need to focus on what they are trying to sell and it DOESN’T measure up to the camaro at all, or the Dodge Challenger EITHER when it comes out next year.. Again they MUST pull their head out and make it competetive or when the other two cars come out they’ll get burried.. and they don’t have anything else worth buying right now either just the mustang…

One thing no one can argue with is records like the one that ford owns and has since the mid 80’s. Show me a GM that will beat fords RS200S that is still in the record book with a 0-60 of 2.1 seconds……. Oh I forgot they don’t have one, that is why ford still has the record!

Ford also can’t seem to figure out the concept of cubic inches on motors. GM has gone to 6 liters on the standard model and 427 cubic inches on the Z06 and Still Ford sticks with the little 5 liter mule.. sure you can supercharge the little motor but its at a cost in reliablitity etc. and you still don’t get the same torque as the cubic inches gives you, and thats what you feel when you stand on it and its what people wan’t in a basic straight line performance car like the mustang… without IRS its going to corner like a dump truck but hey lets say they fix the motor problems first and move on from there…. They can bore and stroke the existing block out to 6 liters and try that in the 2009 models before they get burried by the Camaro when it comes out in 2009 with a six liter 400hp motor and IRS and less weight… time to wake up or die Ford…

If they have ANY chance at all of competing with the Camaro when it comes out they had BETTER have an IRS rear end and at least 400 hp as the Mustang is heavier than the camaro and it is going to have the 400hp corvette motor. They are going to be in the same comparable price range so which would you buy ? Something with 400hp and IRS etc. or something slower with no IRS and heavier for the same general price, jeeezzz i wonder what people will pick…….

I dunno, I kinda think this is a case of “if it ain’t broke.” So, I’m glad to hear that it’s basically going to be an update.

The Mustang is pretty much the only American car on my list of conceivable purchases once I’m finished school.

That being said, one of the reasons for this is that it’s cheap. So, adding even a few 1500 dollar extras could turn me off of purchasing one. IRS and upgraded interiors would be welcome as options, though. Personally, I don’t think they could go wrong offering about a bazillion different options on the Mustang. For instance, why not one that’s AWD? It wouldn’t be a traditional Mustang, but a lot of people would probably be interested in it.

In a Mustang, I do not care if the interior is cheap. Or if the paint is cheap. The running gear is most important. Mustangs should be cheap all around, but powerful and agile handlers. I can’t speak for others.
