Spied: 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR Roadster

04/09/2007, 12:01 PM

By admin

Spy photographers have captured the first images of the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR Roadster, during what appears to be an official photo shoot in the Canary Islands.

The SLR roadster will arrive this summer with a zero to 60 mph time of under four seconds and a top speed in excess of 200 mph. The new model will closely resemble the Mercedes-Benz Vision SLR concept (see gallery below), which debuted at the 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show, nine months after the coupe prototype was unveiled at the Detroit auto show.

Does this mean the supercar market is drying up? I may be wrong, but when the production coupe was announced, didn’t M-B deny that the roadster version would be produced? I believe M-B is several hundred units behind its projected 500 SLRs per year pace, and with the 722 edition and now, it seems, roadster version trying to renew interest, I wonder if this means the supercar market is drying up. Porsche cut short the production of the Carrera GT because of slow sales.

this car was neat as a concept, however in person and in pictures has never caught my eye as the other cars in this segment do.

Jon,

Looks like they have the exhaust run to the back of the car instead of just behind the front wheels as before…

The coupe will be the better looking of the two by far in my opinion.

i definately agree with homeboy word for word, i would drive that car like like a damn madman, the pedal would always be buried to the floor, but some ditsy ass rich person will be driving it 40mph so they can be seen in it. this is one of the few mb`s that bring back the grace and elegance mb lost. i likey very much.

I don’t think the supercar market is drying up. in fact high end buyers now have more coice than they have ever had, think koenigsegg ccx, saleen s7, bugatti veyron, lamborghini murcielago, The mclaren SLR, porsche carrera gt, ferrari enzo(to an extent), ford gt and many others. the Carrera GT production actually went over the original projected amount of production of 1000 units in total, with a total number of cars built of I believe 1415. the SLR is ridiculously quick but more of a GT car, it is soft and supple unlike an enzo or a carrera gt. I think the more choice the consumer has the better. So that they are able to pick truly the best vehicle for their needs. but who really “needs” a 600+ horsepower car well nobody but everyone wants one and if you have the financial means should have a good selection.

The 1999 Vision SLR Concept looks very similar to the ones used in sci-fi movies…except for the roof. The picture of the new model was quite blurd so the similarity in the 1999s and the new one wasn’t justified. Most probably some of parts were modified like its Mercedes transmission mounts- http://www.mbpartswarehouse.com/mercedes_transmissionmount.html
