Zoomzoomer- Nova DOES NOT translate into “no go”. A petroleum company in Mexico actually sold their product under the “Nova” name at the same time… you would assume that people would come to the conclusion it means, no go, right? Nope.

As Snopes puts it, It’s like buying a dinette set, under the brand Notable. Nobodies going to assume it comes with no tables.

What total crap. Reminds me of people who used to buy “Wolfsburg Edition” Jettas in the 90’s. You would say “Nice car, is this a Jetta?” They would say “No, it’s a WOLFSBURG EDITION” like it meant anything at all beyond some crappy badging and a couple of thousand more. Joke.

Jon.. Buick was aware of the slang connotations of the LaCrosse name in French Canada, which is why they marketed it as the Allure in Canada from the start. Chevy successfully marketed the NOVA throughout the 1970s and again in the mid-1980s despite its name translating to “no go” in Spanish.. and now look who drives all the used ones!

It’s always surprising when a marketing team fails to turn over all the stones when settling on a new name. As many of you alluded to above, “Voga” is slang for vaginal yoga… exercises thought to tighten a vagina.
This is like when Buick began to market the LaCrosse only to realize later that it meant “masterbation” in Quebec… a region the car was meant to be sold in.
