This is my mid-life crisis car.

I'll take a Premium in red. My r34 is white, but one I saw this in red....

hangonbig3: I loved the Maxima in its heyday. It'sm still a good car, but it looks too much like its cheaper siblings.

Z06ified: "Damn, how come my raises aren’t increasing as fast as inflation is?" because you ain't at the top.

Need more oil for GM: "The maxima has usually been a better car than the Grand Prix.
"More Americans would rather drive a well built GM product than a POS import with terrible reliability, cheap quality and poor value." But more Americans would also rather drive a well-built import than a GM product with terrible reliability, cheap quality and poor value

beatusmongous: "The Maxima, however, is not the 'POS import with terrible reliability, cheap quality ....'" You're right.

hangonbig3: dealers are jacking up prices. the buyers should boycott.

Need more oil for GM: "No POS import is worth that much," but I think MSRP of this car is reasonable.

The 2008 Dodge Viper (stock and not ACR) was the one Edmunds tested, and the one that the GT-R couldn't beat in the slalom. The ACR is actually stock, because it was made by Chrysler, and not a private tuner or aftermarket shop like Hennessey. It is a race-tuned car, but it would be the likes of the Corvette ZR1 instead of base Corvette, or 911 Turbo instead of Carrera. The ACR is like the V-Spec. Both are factory tuned.

Now, don't get this all wrong, because it really is a lot to take. The Viper has 600 HP and 560 lb.-ft. of torque, and it weighs 3,424 lbs. The GT-R has 480 HP and 43 lb.-ft. of torque, and it weighs 3,836 lbs. By those numbers, one would expect the Viper to stomp on the GT-R in the 1/4 mile. But it doesn't. Why is that? Traction. With the AWD and the electronic assistant features, the GT-R can get a nice jump on the Viper out of the hole, and it has traction to all four wheels. This means it doesn't spin its tires as much as the Viper does at the start, and therefore it can get through the 1/4 mile quicker.

But when it comes to handling, there's a reversal. This is very weird, but the things that help the GT-R in the straight line actually hinder it in the area of handling. Yes, it really does handle well. There is no doubt about that. But it does not handle better than a Viper. This is really quite ironic, because you'd expect the Viper to win the 1/4 mile and the GT-R to win in handling, but it's reverse. Why is that? Traction. The Viper has such wide tires that it sticks to the road like a slot car. The GT-R's tires just can't handle the extra weight that the electronic assistant devices and the AWD add to the car. Plus, the GT-R's tires are thinner, which is actually part of the reason it sprints so well. But it just can't stick to the road in a turn like the Viper can.

As far as tuners go, the GT-R's engine is pretty much maximized to it's potential. They have twin turbos on it already, which I'm sure they will tune it up a bit. I'm also sure the suspension will be tuned, and the V-Spec version will lose some weight. But they will have a lot to do in order to squeeze out seven more seconds on the 'Ring. The Viper, on the other hand, has no turbos. Not even the ACR has turbos. A tuner may be able to get a couple hundred extra HP out of the GT-R, but people are already getting Vipers up to 1,900 HP with turbos. Nissan won't push it that far, and neither will Chrysler, because it means a threat to safety and reliability. So expect around 550 HP from the GT-R V-Spec, and 650 HP from the Viper. As far as handling, unless Nissan changes the tires, the GT-R will not be able to handle as well as the Viper.

And then, when the V-Spec gets a 7:21.5, the Viper guy will just shift once during the back stretch.

You really have to watch all three videos. All three of them are amazing in their own way.

To people who believe Vipers handle poorly: Vipers have better handling than just about anything out there. They have the biggest tires, making them one of the stickiest cars on the road. Check out the slalom and skidpad numbers on the Viper. Even Edmunds Inside Line, who touted the GT-R, said that the only car that the GT-R couldn't beat through the slalom was the Viper. Quoting from Edmunds Inside Line video: "In the slalom, despite the less than ideal surface, the GT-R ripped through the cones at 72.9 miles per hour. That's faster than both the Corvette Z06 and the 911 Turbo. Only the 2008 DODGE VIPER has produced a faster speed through the cones." Other places have found the GT-R getting .96g on the skidpad and 74 mph in the slalom, while .96g is the lowest the Viper ever sees. The Viper can reach as high as 1.05g on the skidpad. To compare that with other cars that supposedly have great handling, the NSX does the slalom at a bit over 68 mph and gets .93g in the skidpad. Viper outhandling the NSX? WTF?

Yes, it is true. The Viper, contrary to popular belief, is actually on of the world's best handling cars. That is why the Viper ACR is currently the 'Ring champ. It's not because it has tons of horsepower, or because it weighs so little. It's because the Viper handles better than just about anything else on the road. Watch the video of the Viper ACR 'Ring run, and you will see that it certainly wasn't power that won the title. The guy was hitting the rev limit all the time (and not shifting), and along the long straight in the back of the 'Ring he simply didn't shift at all. The Viper won because it has superior handling. Period.

If you want to talk about JACKING-UP the price of a car, look at Ferrari. I have a friend that sell them at Ferrari of Beverly Hills, they all go for sticker, the catch is you have to be a repeat customer, you just cant walk in off the street with a bag full of money and say I want a black spider, they don’t work like that. But high-end Sport Cars dealers that you find in “DuPont Register” sells the same car for $40K-$60K over the stick, and yes I know you can not compare a Nissan to a Ferrari, in performance and price, but the principal is the same, besides if you know what you are doing when it comes to car buying you will NEVER pay stick, mark-up, and you will save bigger then any web-site pricing, and if you don’t know maybe you should have a car sales mans as a friend…

Good move, Nissan. Good move.

Not that it matters to me anyways, I'm never going to have the kind of money to spend that a GT-R costs anyway. In a fantasy world where I do have the money, I wouldn't buy the car that got smacked twice on the 'ring - the reason you buy this car is because you want a car that's essentially, as Jeremy Clarkson referred to the Skyline R34, a "50,000-pound Playstation."

The GT-R does one thing well: translates video game into real life - if you take any credence in what Top Gear says, anyways.

Don't mind me, I'm no expert, just flappin' my lips here because I don't understand why this car, that performs below the Viper and the Z06, costs almost as much as a Viper and more than a Z06. A ZR1 is not the right car to compare the GT-R to. The Z06 is.

If you don't believe me go to streetfire.net and look up GT-R versus Z06.

But hey Nissan is going to sell every damn one of them so not like it matters...

To some 10k is a lot, especially your run-of-the-mill first time Nissan buyer, however staying on topic, an extra 10k on the GTR might be a good BUSINESS move by Nissan, as the people who actually buy the GTR's are probably rish guys anyways. I'm not saying I would do the same, but what they did is expected. Hell I saw price adjustments on cars coming a long time ago.......

Now, do the same move on a maxima or whatever they sell, and they could get some backlash as the market for cars like THAT is extremely different that the market for GTR's, ya know?

It was more of an investment to have the exclusive rights to sell the car, service it, etc... Being guaranteed that business is part of the investment.

I don't think a dealer would explain to a customer there is an extra 10k on the car b/c they had to purchase special equipment and put their techs through more training because that just sounds like a lame excuse.

As far as I know dealers weren't forced to make upgrades and sell GTRs.

Brad, that's exactly what an investment is: Spending money so that you can make more money later.

The dealer buys the cars from the manufacturer, and then they sell them for more money. Therefore, they invest in the vehicles so they can reap the benefits of the investment by selling them to the customers.

All I said was we have sold every Maxima we can get our hands on...22 and counting...great car if you actually come and drive one, rather than just complain about the way it looks....and as for the GTR, do you have any idea how much it costs just for specialized tools and training for that one product line...no you probably do not...when you are promised two maybe three cars and have to cover the initial investment, I would not call what dealers are doing as jacking up prices...it is called running a business.

"More Americans would rather drive a well built GM product than a POS import with terrible reliability, cheap quality and poor value."

No $#¡†! That's like saying more people would rather eat a grilled flat iron steak over a Big Mac. But GM has a reputation to break, and that reputation is that they sell the Big Mac of the cars. GM has a lot of work to do to kill that reputation, and they can do it. So far, they've been doing well.

The Maxima, however, is not the "POS import with terrible reliability, cheap quality and poor value." And to say it is just that means you don't know your competition. Prejudice is not good when it comes to sales. Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer...

YES!!! “Need more oil for GM” all sales men are LYERS!!! Specially when we see a “JACK” like you coming from a mile away, I’m the first one to say “BUY AMERICON” but you have to give credit were it’s due and the legacy of the Maxima is not a bad one, today’s product may fall short of what it once was, but to be dissing it, that’s having no class bro.

The Grand Prix is and always has been equal if not better than the Maxima. More Americans would rather drive a well built GM product than a POS import with terrible reliability, cheap quality and poor value. The Maxima is just as big a failure as the ones before it. Don't let some ignorant, biased salesperson convince you otherwise because they are obvilously lying.

johnny, you are so right about the Maxima -- FWD CVT with fake shift points? That's just insulting. You might as well call a Grand Prix a 4-door sports car. Oh wait, I drive a four-door sports car every day :)

Nissan should be sued for false advertising for trying to bill the Maxima as a '4 door sports car'. Not only is there no manual transmission offered but the autobox is a CVT to boot. It's a lovely car if a glorified Altima is your cup of tea and I'm glad they're moving off at least one dealer's lot, but paddle shifting a transmission that only pretends to have different gear ratios does not a 'sports car' make.
