GM plans several reveals for Detroit Auto Show

Less than a month away from the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, members of the press were given a sneak peak at what GM planned to bring to the show. Although no pictures or video were allowed during the preview, one journalist decided to describe the products ahead of the official release.

According to a report by Canadian Driver, an online auto magazine out of Canada, Chevrolet has taken the wraps off of several of its new models set to arrive for 2010 and 2011. The list includes the all-new Chevy Aveo, Aveo RS, Chevy Spark, Chevy Orlando CUV, Chevy Camaro convertible and the all-new 2011 Chevy Malibu.

Although it is no secret that the Chevy Camaro is long overdue for the arrival of its convertible variant, journalists did not expect to see a top-down Camaro convertible as soon as they did when Chevy had a dropped-top Camaro on display. The real show stopper however was the freshly redesigned Chevy Malibu.

Like the Ford Fusion's fairly substantial re-working after only four years on the market, the Malibu will be receiving a substantial overhaul after just three years - complete with more aggressive body lines, sharper line-edges similar to those in the Cadillac family, more pronounced wheel arch lines and a raised rear deck. Although the Malibu has enjoyed fairly stable sales figures, it has recently lost some ground to the Ford Fusion as it was replaced as the top-selling car produced by an American-based automaker.

A version of the Chevy Orlando crossover that was shown at last year's NAIAS was also on display, but wasn't shown in full production form. Chevy plans to unveil the true production version of this seven person hauler come January.

GMC is also expected to unveil its interpretation of the Orlando CUV at the NAIAS. GMC's take on the CUV is known as the Granite, and will be marketed towards a younger audience than the Chevy Orlando. GMC hopes that the Granite will compete with vehicles such as the Honda Element, Kia Soul and Nissan Cube.

The final and possibly most intriguing reveal was that of the Buick Regal in "sport" trim. Rumors suggest that the hot Regal will gain either the RS or GS nameplate, and feature the same 325 horsepower engine that is found in the Open Insignia OPC, on which the car is heavily based.
