I like the Smart. I friend of mine just bought one, with the optional BRABUS rims and exhaust.

They are very popular here in Portugal and throughout the rest of Europe.

saw one here in south metro denver yesterday… cool I guess for the local trips to the grocery store but I think it is just too tiny. Might be a different story in a major metropolitan area like LA or NY though

It’s a city car – it’ll naturally look out of place on a 4-lane American highway.

What I wish is that Americans could get the CDI (i.e. diesel) version as we do in Canada. 60 MPG (real-world!) versus 40 is a major incentive to buy one.

I saw it in the suburbs, not the highway… still looked astonishingly out of place.

Honestly, I got my fiance out of her ‘01 civic hatch because it felt like a death trap for commuting (plus absolutely HORRID in the snow) I cringe when I see kids riding in the back seat of a Mini, their skulls 3 inches from the hatch glass, same level as most truck/SUV bumpers. I personally would not feel safe in one of these. Might not be the case, but “feel” is the correct word.

That false sense of safety is something that people really need to look at, just because you drive a large SUV or Truck does not mean you are instantly safer, size does not equal saftey in all cases. I drive a Smart CDI in Canada, it is my only car and it has been great over the last year. Very capable in the snow, 60mpg actual mileage in city driving and if you have never actually been in one you would be very surprised how large they feel. I do agree that it is a city car and I would not take it on a long highway journey but with four airbags, abs and essentially a roll cage around me I do feel safe!

Maybe if fewer people drove SUVs we’d all be safer

I got one them there Smart cars stuck in the grille of my H2 this morning. I was driving like I always do, basically full throttle from gas station to gas station listening to Larry The Cable Guy whilst admiring my #3 sticker on my back window in memory of The Intimidator, when that dang little bugger got stuck in my grille. Not so smart, huh?

Jeez its all or nothing with you guys, since when did suggesting fewer SUVs equate to a ban on all automobiles?

We have hundreds even thousands in Canada. Whats wrong with the US, why dont they bring more in? Whats taking them so long to adapt.

Was on the waiting list with ZAP and probably would have had one by now if treated better. They were high on the jerk factor and lacking in honesty and competence.

Daimler is losing more money on Smart than they are on Maybach — and that’s really difficult to.

Negative $714 million USD a year!

look people, the American’s will learn later (like usuly) about safty fuel consuption, CO2 emissions, etc… Since when is more safty to drive a H2 or a SUV? The point is that they don’t read especialized magazines otherwise the opinion was not this !!!
Don´t be so “pimp” – open your mind – and look a litle further

When did I say anything as a promotion of an SUV? All I said is that there are a few cars that I “feel” like a rolling coffin… the smallest of the small vehicles (back seat of a Mini, civic hatch, smart…) I think are too small.

I drive a ‘04 dodge stratus for f**ks sake! how does a 34 mpg v-6 sound! (well, 25mpg when flogging it in the city, 34 highway)

I NEVER said ANYTHING about a SUV being safer, I simply stated that I would not feel safe in something THAT small.

Americans like cars that are big and fast and growl. Smart cars do not growl. I would personally like to drive a metallic purple 1967 Pontiac GTO with a bored out supercharged 450CID V8 motor with straight pipes. I can’t say I’d feel a whole lot safer… but what the hell, atleast in that I’d die driving way too fast and wrecklessly rather than getting crushed by an Expedition in a parking lot.
