2010 Chevrolet Impala, Monte Carlo teaser sketch?

04/30/2007, 8:34 AM

By Nick

A sketch of a mystery Chevrolet model appeared in the backdrop of a recent press photo taken inside the Rear Wheel Drive Performance Studio at GM’s Warren, Michigan, Design Center.

The image shows GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner (center), and GM Vice-Chairmen Bob Lutz (left) and Fritz Henderson (right) posing in front of a full-scale production clay model of the 2009 Chevrolet Camaro.

Since the production Camaro is nearly identical to the concept car — as GM executives have stated many times — the most interesting aspect of this photo is the unknown Chevy model shown on a posted in the background.

Mr. Lutz has previously stated GM was considering building a new Chevrolet Impala sedan and Monte Carlo coupe on the rear-wheel-drive Zeta platform, which underpins the new Camaro and Pontiac G8. It’s difficult to tell whether the car pictured has two or four doors.

Lutz recently said GM put all future Zeta platform vehicles — aside from the G8 and Camaro — on hold due to strict new government regulations on emissions. However, Lutz’s comments are widely viewed as political posturing, and there’s a good chance development of several new models will continue.

Hope not. GM needs to get off that Monte Carlo / Impala nonsense and come up with something relivant today.

I’m pretty sure it’s a coupe. Unless the rear wheels go into the rear door that much. Thats my two cents.

I wonder… it’s hard to tell from the blurry sketch, but don’t the dimensions and proportions look Pontiac G6/Saturn Aura-ish?

Could be a 2 door Malibu aiming at the Altima coupe. The car looks small, be it a very blurry pic. I’m not sold on Chevy having 2 Zeta coupes.

Buenos, that’s what I was thinking. The car doesn’t look too big.

Homeboy has some issues he needs resolved!

The pic is blurry, but if it’s a RWD Chevy coupe that doesn’t seem to make much sense other than the Monte Carlo, but I thought Chevy was dropping the MC name?

I think this is the 2009 impala, btw Madcapp, the impala sells 250,000 a year. It is very relevant. it has the size and room of an SUV with none of the drawbacks.

Concept illustrations are often out of proportion, but this does not look full-sized to me. Looks like a mid-sized coupe to me, but I doubt they’d use the Malibu name on it.

Exactly roadmaster, the Impala is very important to GM and if they get it right, (like they did back in 96 with the SS) it will be to enthusiasts as well.

About the size of the Crossfire I think.

Must be a leftover, before GM knew it would come with an emasculted V6 and didn’t have to compete with it.

cknoff is right, it must be a coupe.

One other thing to consider. Though GM may not be the smartest, it’s pretty hard to believe that if the drawing was one that was not meant to be released, that the room would not have been swept before the photo was taken.

———–>that car, even from first glance, clearly has only 2 doors because the wheelbase isn’t long enough to accomidate rear doors, just look at the back wheels….

I agree Ken, and also look at the size of the tires compared to the greenhouse. This is clearly not a full-sized car.

Remember this is a SKETCH, and the artwork is at an ANGLE.. so the proportions are going to look “off”. Hard to say whether it is a 2- or 4-door car, but wouldn’t a Malibu coupe or Monte Carlo be redundant with the Camaro available? I think it is a design study for the next Impala.. whether or not it is a RWD vehicle is hard to say at this point.. it’s just a SKETCH strategically placed in the photo to titillate hardcore fanboys like us!

It looks like a Volt with a large grill to me. The proportions make it seem like a small sedan to me, but they are probably off.

It could just be strategically placed and focused to get people to see it and talk about GM. It could also be green screened and photoshopped to purposely put it in. Think about it, free advertising. I highly doubt it was accidentally caught in the photo.
