Although the Chevrolet Camaro has offered quite a few trim and package options over the years, a fairly consistent hierarchy – in some form or another — was present during the car’s 35 year production run – base six-cylinder, Z28 and SS. But a new report indicates that the 2010 Camaro will tear up this road map.
According to Road & Track, Chevrolet will launch the Camaro with three trim levels, but not the three we have already outlined. Instead, R&T says Chevy will launch the LS, LT and SS, with both base models being powered by V6s.
If the report is accurate, look for the base LS model to be powered by a 220 horsepower 3.5L V6 while the up-level LT will use a version of the Cadillac CTS’ 3.6L V6, likely producing about 300 horsepower. The SS model will do with a version of the Corvette’s LS3 motor, rated at 400-405 horsepower.
If you aren’t confused yet, just hold on a minute. Road & Track also surmises that a Z28 model will join the range sometime after the convertible bows in 2010, but that it will trump the SS – completely going against the Camaro’s history. Power for the Z28 is said to be sourced from a detuned version of the Corvette ZR1’s supercharged LS9 motor, making somewhere in the neighborhood of 480 to 500 horsepower.
While it was widely assumed that the Camaro would offer a 400 horsepower model and 500 horsepower model derived from the ZR1, it was believed that the top model would wear the SS moniker. The availability of two V6s is also a bit perplexing as it would seem to make more sense to offer just one six-cylinder engine – especially considering the direct-injection V6 will surely return better fuel-economy than the 3.5L.
To add even more confusion to the mix, Chevrolet is still considering a four-cylinder option – likely to replace the LS model’s V6. And with Camaro naming apparently out of whack, it’s completely possible that the four pot Camaro could wear the ZL1 nameplate.

I am tired of this car already. GM pisses me off, they don’t even have this car out but they have a billion different engine/trim/badging combo’s. That’s why I’m buying a Challenger R/T in November. Why would they be offering all this crap in a car that’s not even been out on the market yet to test and see if it sells.

Where is 260 HP 4 cylinder engine? They forgot about it. Ah, by the time this car will see the road, most of us will be in retirement home.

A four cylinder Camaro is so laughable it isn’t even funny. At least a V6 version would be palatable because it has enough torque to make things interesting.

4 cylinder with 260 hp and 260 lbs of torque should be much more plausible then underpowered V6.

For a car the size of the Sky or Cobalt, yes. But a 3700lb car like the Camaro, I think the V6 will prove to be much more livable. I had the 3.6 in my Enclave and it moved that beast down the road pretty well (when it was running
) I can only imagine what it would be like with the Cobalt motor.
If you’re going to go small in the Camaro, go diesel IMO.

I had the 3.5L engine in an older Malibu and it regularly returned 32 MPG. I don’t think the DI engine will do the same. I know that sounds crazy but the older ohv engines are a lot lighter than the dohc di engines, and so the will be efficient. This is why corvettes achieve good gas mileage. The OHV engines are very light in weight. 220hp is not really underpowered either. It is a very smooth driving engine. Consider the base Mustang 4.0 is only 200hp.

Enclave does not come with detuned 220 HP V6 engine, perhaps that is the reason for good motivation. The torque characteristic of Enclave V6 and Caddy V6 are about the same, there is no indication what the torque of detuned V6 is. Torque of turbo 4 is high and it comes at relatively low RPM.

A few sources have indicated that the 3.5L OHV engine will be offered. LLN asks why would both engines be offered and the answer is simple- cost. They are NOT going to sell you a 300hp DI V6 in a $23k Camaro when the same engine exists in a $36k CTS. The 3.5L should allow for a low base price and return better fuel economy than the DI V6. The Aura with the 3.5 and 4 speed got 18/29 with a weight of about 3500lbs. Camaro should be able to match that with a 5 or 6 speed auto.

Sure do mr.meanpants. I also remember it being about 600lbs lighter than this Camaro. I’m assuming you’re implying the 260hp turbo four should be available in the Camaro, but unless you absolutely have to have the Camaro why wouldn’t you buy a Cobalt or Solstice Coupe instead? Either would blow the Camaro’s doors off because of curb weight.

Good that they might add another V6 since most sales will be V6 sales. I always liked the Z28 over the SS, since the Z28 was good in turns and such, they focused on the suspension, while the SS was god for straight line performance.

Need4SSpeed is quite accurate. Really the SS will get the LS3 engine from the Corvette, which will be around 430 HP. The Z28 will probably get the LS9 from the Corvette or the new Cadillac CTS-V engine. Something around 575 to 600 horses. What hemiroadrunner said about getting a Challenger, there won’t be much of a challenge.
