Finalists for the annual World Car of the Year award, which will be presented in March at the New York International Auto Show, have been announced. Last year’s overall winner, the Volkswagen Golf, beat out semi-finalists Ford Fiesta and Toyota iQ.
The awards are voted on by 59 automotive writers from 23 countries. The three categories – Car of the Year, Performance Car of the Year and Green Car of the Year – have been narrowed down to just a handful of cars each. Three finalists from each category will be announced in a few weeks at the Geneva Motor Show.
The nominees are all either brand new to the market or were substantially revised for the 2010 model year.

Opel/Vauxhall Insignia/Buick Regal for car of the Working catagory
Ferrari California – For the Sporting catagory
Ford Fusion hybrid – For the Hairless catagory
Although I like the S400 as a hybrid. It’s got the real deal hybrid power tucked in the same spot as a normal car battery – that’s really what the future hybrid will be. Plus it’s the cheapest S Class.

Polo or Insignia/Regal.
R8 V10
Bluemotion. GTFO hybrids. You can’t even come close to a 70+ mpg diesel.

gugy – The price and the lack of accessories that allows me to personalize it was my biggest turn off with the Q5. Other than that its an awesome car and a blast to drive.

It is really indeed a great car.
The thing is you cannot find a base model for less than $40k and the premium plus that is the way to go IMHO then we are talking $45k. Just too much. It should be less, but if Audi is doing well selling them, then good for then and bad for us. lol

I’ve seen 4 brand new S4’s just this week, idrinorbarsaku. Every time I see one I just want it more. Just saw a white R8 with a foreign college student behind the wheel. Of course. Lucky bastard.

A4,
If you are implying that only foreign college students drive an R8, then thanks!
I’m still surprised that the s4 is not on there. It can’t be because of the price, or because it lacks anything. It’s a great car that you can drive all year long. Too bad you can’t lease them right now. I would have one in our garage if they could.

World Car of the Year: VW Polo. The nominees are a weak bunch; the Polo is the only one I’d consider buying.
Performance Car of the Year: Nissan 370Z. Best performance for the price.
World Green Car of the Year: Ford Fusion Hybrid. Finally a car you can live with; great fuel economy is not mutually exclusive with normalcy.

Regal, R8 V10, and Fusion should be the winners. But my favorites are the Q5, E 63, and S class hybrid. While the S-Class’s mpg might not be that impressive, you have to remember that it has a huge gas tank.

Car of the Year : Polo, they have to be politically correct
my choice : Panamera
Performance Car of the Year: Boxster/Cayman, for the handling awards they got
my choice : GT3
Green Car of the Year : Bluemotion, because hybrids suck
my choice : Polo TDI Bluemotion
i’m surprised no one mentioned the Evora.

I mentioned the evora, and I would expect it to win in that category, but the R8 will prove to be a strong contender. The Prius can’t win because they also look at dependability/recalls, and this list was contrived before all the mayhem too over at toyota.
One think that I believe is noticeable, is the commercials from audi’s TDI and Toyota’s Prius. The TDI are informative and real, like the real potential of saving gas while having fun, as to the prius commercials which involve the car driving through retarded green fields, over a path that is separated by way too many fake flowers! They should at least wait till april if they want to award anything to the prius, that way, if they get any negative remarks towards it, they can quickly take it back!
