It has already been revealed that production of Porsche’s 2012 Cayman and Boxster models will be moving in-house – rather than outsourced to companies like Valmet and Magna — but you might be surprised to learn what vehicle will be sharing Porsche’s production line.
Normal production of the Cayman and Boxster will take place at Volkswagen’s Zuffenhausen plant but, should demand outstrip the factory’s capacity, overflow production will be moved to VW’s Osnabrueck plant.
However, the Osnabrueck plant is scheduled to begin production of the Golf convertible during the second quarter of 2011. That means the Porsche twins will likely share a production line with a relatively inexpensive, front-wheel drive model at some point in the future.
Although not necessarily a bad thing, some Porsche owners might take issue with their sports car being produced at the same plant as a cream-puff cruiser. Quality control could be another concern as VW’s hasn’t exactly earned a reputation for quality over the last few years. However, as long as Porsche can keep up with demand, the situation will be a non-issue.
